My Concerto for Orchestra (2007) is a twenty-minute work in which different sections of the orchestra, as well as individual solos and duos from within the orchestra, are highlighted as the music unfolds. The work continues my interest in two-movement forms that began with my Cello Concerto (1991), and was later developed in Sortilège (1996) and Symphony (Broken Consort) (2004). In these works, and in the Concerto for Orchestra, each movement is given equal weight and importance with the second developing earlier material and taking it in new directions. Octavo Available www.jenwagnermusic.com  p.p1 {margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; font: 12.0px Baskerville; color: #000000; -webkit-text-stroke: #000000} span.s1 {font-kerning: none} The text Lacrimósa is taken from the Dies Irae sequence in the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass.  The piece is composed in three sections, representative of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  The close harmonies create the mournful emotional tension.  Word painting and story telling is apparent throughout, especially in passages such as resúrget, in which a solo soprano soars above the choir representing the ascension to heaven, and the repeated Lacrimósa, paints an image of tears falling down ones face.  A sense of urgency begins to build in the  Judicándus section, and the melodic and harmonic structure changes.  As the harmonies build and tempo increases you can feel the fear of the unknown future which lies ahead.  Begging and pleading for forgiveness ensues as the voices call out, párce Déus, to be seated at the Father’s side. As the tension builds and harmonies become more complex the piece escalates to its climax and comes to an abrupt end. After a slight pause, the calm settles in.  Judgement has been passed and the tenors transition us to the Píe Jésu section with Dóna éis réquiem, surrounded by the return of the melodic motif meant to appear as the angels delivering the assurances of God’s mercifulness.  The final phrase dóna éis réquiem, is sung with cross voicing found in the tenor and bass section representing the ascension to heaven as the harmonies settle into their final resting place.

Evocative piano solo for Early Intermediate (2nd, 3rd year piano).One of my favorite moments as a piano teacher was discovering Night Train by Chris Goldston in that great collection of Alfred's called Contest Winners, in this case Vol. 2. I'll never forget turning to the second page of this moody A minor piece and finding the Bb Lydian, D minor, and E Phrygian passages. That piece is magic, and most of my students would confirm that. The A minor return has a sublime little twist, which was one of the inspirations for indicating hand positions larger than just 5 steps by means of a V. And, of course the final chord is probably the first time the student has ever heard, much less played, the sound of stacked 4ths (because they're probably not yet listening to Coltrane and McCoy Tyner). The first movement is slow and expressive; it begins and ends with an oboe solo. The second movement is a lively duo in an improvisational style. The third movement is similar in structure and style to the third movement, also beginning and ending with a solo. Incantations was premiered and recorded by Geoffrey Burgess on oboe and Elaine Funaro on harpsichord. Mr. Burgess performed the 1st and 3rd movements on the oboe d’amore and the 2nd movement on the baroque oboe, giving the movements a somewhat darker and more serene timbre. Their recording is on the album, Incantations & Inspirations.
