The Vancouver Guitar Orchestra asked me to write a piece describing something typically Canadian.The first thing that came to mind was listening to the wonderful call of a loon while sitting around a bonfire; a clear sky evening, on the shore line of a Canadian lake.I tried to imitate a crackling bonfire with a triangle, and the calls of loon conversation, at the beginning and end of the piece. The mid section should show a pleasant atmosphere of simply observing and enjoying the evening in a peaceful manner. A very special thanks to Anna Pietrzak for her inspiration and support for this project.L’Orchestre de guitares de Vancouver m’a demandé d’écrire une pièce décrivant quelque chose de typiquement canadien.La première chose qui m’est venue à l’esprit a été d’écouter le magnifique appel d’un huard en étant assis autour d’un feu de camp, sous un ciel clair, au bord d’un lac canadien.J’ai essayé d’imiter un feu de camp crépitant avec un triangle, et les appels des huards, au début et à la fin de la pièce. La section centrale devrait évoquer une atmosphère agréable où l’on observe simplement et apprécie la soirée paisiblement. Most barcarolle pieces are in triple time, but in this piece I tried to depict the boat drifting on the ocean at midnight deliberately using quadruple time, and performing improvisationally. The cyclically falling or rising arpeggio represents the fluctuation of the waves. At bar 24, with a delicate D note, it changes to D minor. Please play differently between the first piano, piu piano, and the piano after the crescendo. At 32 it returns to major again and sixtuplets start trying to move the music forward, but still sempre piano, no crescendo. At bar 41 the music finally gets to the strongest part, but it's still mezzo piano. A long trill at 49 melts the intermediate part, and the recapitulation part follows at 52. Play expressively but calmly the phrase from 58 like falling stars.

Lua para Epilogo de Verão, is dedicated to the Brazilian guitarist Fabio Zanon, who is both a great friend and a tremendous inspiration.This étude tackles solid chords and contrary motion in the left hand, and, like all the études in this collection, voice separation and phrasing. In measure 24 the guitarist must execute a diagonal barré, where the first finger covers position IV at the first string, and position V at the fifth string, hence the V/IV indication after the barré symbol. The practicalities of navigating through the different chord shapes and rhythms in the piece mean that not all notes can be held for their full, written value. Danceuphoria is the opening piece, an uneven, powerful dance which immediately creates an uplifting mood. Melodic Sorrow is a piece dedicated to the memory of my father, Konstantinos Nousis. It's one of the first pieces I wrote for guitar as a teenager. Here you can read an evolved version of that first piece which keeps the simplicity of the primary inspiration.Lifeness is an ode to life piece full of rich colors, melodies and harmonies. Meditation, originally written as the theme music for a Reiki Yoga YouTube channel, is a very slow and meditative piece with short melodic legato lines. Hope evokes warmer feelings. The only way to come out victorious is to turn limitations into possibilities, to leave to the listener's imagination what the sound cannot return, to play on the strengths-and there are many-of the instrument to which the score is destined.The flute, so archaic and close to human vocality, lends itself perfectly to music that alludes to theatrical aspects. So I decided to take up the request of the talented Italian flutist Michela Podera, and compose a short piece for her, all centered on recitative-flavored etchings, sometimes whispered and sometimes declaimed in a stentorian manner. The immediate source of inspiration was a painting by the Neapolitan painter Vincenzo Laricchia, to whom I owe the poetic mood and title of this work of mine: Masquerade.Composer pour flûte solo est un défi. La seule manière de sortir victorieux est de transformer les limitations en possibilités, de laisser à l'imagination de l'auditeur ce que le son ne peut restituer, de jouer sur les forces - et il y en a beaucoup - de l'instrument auquel la partition est destinée.La flûte, si archaïque et proche de la vocalité humaine, se prête parfaitement à une musique qui évoque des aspects théâtraux.
