The work was written in 1860/61 by two English clergymen, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes and the lyrics by Rev. William Whiting with inspiration from the Old and New Testaments. The Navy Hymn is also known as Melita. This noble music was a favorite of President Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt and was performed at the funeral of John F. Kennedy. Scott Pappal has beautifully arranged this moving work for brass quintet. It can be performed by moderately advanced performers and would be a very nice addition to a service.

However, unlike the original Presto agitato, this work is slow, expressive, and calm, and even hints at some inspiration from Johann Pachelbel’s Canon in D. The song has been identified as a development of a Cuban folk song entitled La Canción del �rbol whose title translates as the song of the tree, the royal poinciana being a favorite Caribbean flowering plant.[1][2] However composer Nat Simon would claim the song's tune came to him while he was dining at Manhattan Theater District restaurant Leone's, and that he jotted down a rough draft of the melody on his table's cloth which - with Leone's permission - he took home to work out the completed melody at his piano. Lyrics for the song were completed in about thirty minutes by Buddy Bernier, who cited as his inspiration a postcard of a royal Poinciana tree he'd recently received from Florida.[3].

It came to me at 3am yesterday and I went into my studio to notate it. It's a dreamy, soothing and sometimes soaring piece that reminded me of the octopus from the amazing documentary My Octopus Teacher. Part 1 is possibly more beginner intermediate, and I think some of the parts can be played as individual solos. I've included a link to the youtube demo on the score with an above hands view and a light up keyboard so that students can follow the score and listen.My husband and children loved this piece when they heard it, so I'm excited to have it published for others to learn and play. Part 3 was an idea from a piece I improvized in the Tottenham Court tube station a few years ago (yes, there was a piano in the tube station, and there should be a piano in every tube station as far as I'm concerned :) The theme I played that day never left me and it seemed to fit here. I wrote an expanded version of part 3 called Flight in D major that I hope to include on my website singplaystudios.com and here in a few weeks, so if you like part 3, I hope you'll check that piece out too.
