The work was written in 1860/61 by two English clergymen, Rev. John Bacchus Dykes and the lyrics by Rev. William Whiting with inspiration from the Old and New Testaments. The Navy Hymn is also known as Melita. This noble music was a favorite of President Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin D. Roosevelt and was performed at the funeral of John F. Kennedy. Scott Pappal has beautifully arranged this moving work for brass quintet. It can be performed by moderately advanced performers and would be a very nice addition to a service.

It was named by Abel Tasman on the  30th November 1642, when a storm forced his ship out to sea before he could anchor there. He did return there  in later days. Throughout its history it has seen indigenous people in their canoes and famous explorers such as  Abel Tasman, Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne  , Bruni d'Entrecasteaux, William Bligh, Matthew Flinders, James Kelly  and James Cook sail its waves. In colonial times whalers could also be seen trying to make their fortune. In more  recent times local sailors, including those in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race try and win over one of nature’s  more challenging waterways. This piece is a tribute to them, and the songs that would have been sung by sailors in the bygone era.

Béla Viktor János Bartók is considered to be one of Hungary’s greatest composers (along with Franz Liszt), and is regarded as one of the most important writers of the 20th century. His music tends to reflect two trends that helped to change the sound of music in the 20th century: the breakdown of diatonic harmony; and a renewed interest in using nationalism as a source for musical inspiration. For this latter trend, Bartók turned to Hungarian folk music and become a key figure in influencing the modern use of indigenous music and techniques.  In 1904, whilst at a resort in Hungary, Bartók overheard his nanny, Lidi Dósa, singing Transylvanian folk songs, which sparked a lifelong devotion to folk music. Further influenced by Strauss, Bartók started to write music based on folk songs, including his Romanian Folk Dances (Op. 8a, Sz. 43, BB 56) for piano in 1910, made up of two folk songs. The original version of E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 2001 and premiered by the Eastwind Trio d’Anches (the faculty reed trio from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the composer on bassoon) during a tour in New Zealand and Australia in May 2001. The premiere of the version for saxophone trio was performed by members of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet on February 5, 2008.E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was inspired by the Australasian tour and my return home to New Zealand as a performer. Another inspiration was that my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in February 2001. Due to this there are elements of sadness and happiness throughout the piece. The bittersweet first movement begins melancholy, with a melody that freely switches between minor and major modes, but ends up with a lively dancing section focusing on happy memories, where the chickens from my grandmother’s farm may even be heard. The second movement is lively throughout with extensive use of mixed meter and includes a jazz rock interlude.While the work does not contain any actual New Zealand elements in the music, it was evocative of my time spent there growing up.  It is in a style typical of my writing, containing jazzy influences combined with the more traditional. The title is given in Maori (the language of the native Polynesian race in New Zealand) and English and merely relates to the fact that it is written for three woodwind instruments. This work has been performed throughout North America and the South Pacific.This work also exists in two double reed versions: one for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, and another for oboe and two bassoons.

This arrangement pays tribute to the most popular jazz version done by Ahmed Jamal’s Piano trio from 1958, Live At The Pershing, But Not For Me Album.  The song has been identified as a development of a Cuban folk song entitled La Canción del �rbol whose title translates as the song of the tree, the royal poinciana being a favorite Caribbean flowering plant.[1][2] However composer Nat Simon would claim the song's tune came to him while he was dining at Manhattan Theater District restaurant Leone's, and that he jotted down a rough draft of the melody on his table's cloth which - with Leone's permission - he took home to work out the completed melody at his piano. Lyrics for the song were completed in about thirty minutes by Buddy Bernier, who cited as his inspiration a postcard of a royal Poinciana tree he'd recently received from Florida.
