German.When a composer like Enjott Schneider gets down to collecting original texts from lonely hearts columns and setting them to music in their original wording in an entirely unadorned way, irony, mockery and humour are inevitable. This can be experienced in Schneider's 10-minute four-part cycle 'Variationen über die Liebe' for five-part mixed choir (SMezATB) and piano, a masterful musical caricature of ordinary, banal platitudes. One of the work's highlights certainly is the rousing 'Tango delle abbreviature' which consists mainly of abbreviations. The four rhythmically and harmonically highly demanding miniatures, which demand all kinds of vocal techniques from the singers, are rather destined for professional vocal ensembles.

Ma’iingan (pronounced mah IN-gun) is the Ojibwe word for wolf (Canis lupus). The poem “Aangodinong� (Sometimes) from Wewemi by Margaret Noodin inspired the piece. Ma’iingan issues a call to action to address the extinction crisis by saving the wolves from hunters and habitat loss. Transcribed wolf calls provide some of the melodic material for the piece and luckily fall in a good range for the flute. Designed for intermediate level flutists, the piece employs pitch bends and timbral trills using straightforward alternate fingerings as well as optional slight lip bends. These accessible extended techniques give the intermediate player an introduction to features usually found only in more difficult music. The score blossomed during a fellowship at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, a pastoral setting that nurtured embracing the poem’s vivid landscape. The piano provides a repeating foundation over which the choir playfully evokes the spare text, using variations of the initial theme throughout. There is a contemplative moment midway, then the pulse resumes, concluding with a gleeful repetition of the last line.The Red Wheelbarrow is a wonderfully approachable and fun piece of music. The singers of Inversion had a blast working through the rhythmic lilt and subtly beautiful harmonies, so often found in Rich Campbell's music. The clever musical interpretation brought out the wry humor of the text, which helped to set a relaxed atmosphere for the rest of our concert. It was exactly the opener we needed!-Trevor F. Las Encantadas was the eloquent name bestowed upon the Galápagos Islands by the Dominican friar and Panamanian bishop, Fray Tomás de Berlanga.  He had discovered these enchanted isles quite by chance as the ship he was on, sailing by order of the Holy Roman Emperor, was blown off course hundreds of miles from its Peruvian destination, landing him among the islands of the Columbus Archipelago.  Born in fire and rich with natural beauty Las Encantadas held some mystery for sailors as these isles would seemingly appear, and disappear, from sight, apparently becoming lost in the mists and sea currents that surrounded the islands.  Las Encantadas also held some intrigue for the American author Herman Melville, who in his novella by the same name, included ten fictional short sketches about the Galápagos Islands in The Piazza Tales.Kerion Anderson tells the story of these now well-known islands in his own inimitable way with his work, Las Encantadas, by drawing musical sketches for us that depict the discovery of this archipelago with their sandy warm beaches, their rugged and forbidding coast lines with towering rocks standing as sentinels to the peaceful, blue-watered bays.  When listening to Las Encantadas one can’t help but picture a ship arriving among the isles, with sails unfurled, and sailors standing on deck gazing in wonderment at the strange animals, colorful flora and the exotic birds swirling overhead.  The uplifting spirit of Las Encantadas takes us from island to island until the music bids farewell to these enchanted isles as the ship sails away at the setting of the sun, leaving us with a sense of pathos and wonder.
