Im Frühjahr 2012 schrieb ich für das Duo Imaginaire ein knapp viertelstündiges Werk für die ganz ungewöhnliche, aber umso reizvollere Duobesetzung von Klarinette und Harfe. Der romantisch-ironische Titel einer melancholischen Serenade gibt den semantischen Inhalt des Stückes recht genau wieder. Musikalisch formal handelt es sich um ein großformatiges rondoartiges Gebilde, in dem sich zahlreiche melodische und virtuose Episoden um ein schwebend-synkopisches Thema gruppieren, das sich zwar verändert, aber als roter Faden trotzdem deutlich wiederzuerkennen ist. Das Stück besitzt einen tonalen Rahmen, der auf siebentönigen Skalen basiert, die die Gegebenheiten der Harfe als diatonisches Instrument nutzen, ohne ein einziges Mal als echte Dur- oder Mollskalen in Erscheinung zu treten. Der serenadenhafte Charakter des Stückes wird unterstrichen durch die Charakterisierung der Klarinette als lineares Gesangsinstrument und die Harfe als akkordisch geführtes Zupfinstrument. Selbstverständlich verlassen beide Instrumente immer wieder den ihnen angestammten Bereich (die Harfe beginnt zu singen, während sich die Klarinette in üppigen Figurationen ergeht), wodurch ein kammermusikalisch dichtes und klanglich reizvolles Gewebe entsteht. - Stefan Heucke.

This can be experienced in Schneider's 10-minute four-part cycle 'Variationen über die Liebe' for five-part mixed choir (SMezATB) and piano, a masterful musical caricature of ordinary, banal platitudes. One of the work's highlights certainly is the rousing 'Tango delle abbreviature' which consists mainly of abbreviations. The four rhythmically and harmonically highly demanding miniatures, which demand all kinds of vocal techniques from the singers, are rather destined for professional vocal ensembles.

The opening chorale is played as gradually more themes are added above in a dignified and legato subject where instruments sustain notes to give a lingering echo effect. Players need to be aware of their role in this to maximise the effect. The second subject increases the intensity until the time signature change introduces a second chorale. Then, a short imitative passage leads to a rising appogiatura theme and the climax of the work, which re-introduces the original chorale in a major tonality. With versions for brass ensemble, brass band, wind orchestra and woodwind orchestra, this work has been placed in concerts when a meaningful, reflective moment is required.
