Soprano voice, mezzo-soprano voice, or tenor voice and piano - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.9229-E Composed by Juliana Hall. 7 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #9229-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.9229-E). English.Written for Jun Mo Yang, a young tenor studying in the graduate Vocal Arts Program at the Bard Conservatory of Bard College. He and his fellow students were working on a special project studying contemporary composers whose work engages with climate change, environmentalism, and the natural environment. The students had been asked to read a chapter from David Haskell’s Sounds Wild and Broken and had further been given the following direction to guide them: “we are assigning each of you to a project in which you will seek out song repertoire from a living composer whose work responds to climate change or the natural environment, heightening our connection to and awareness of the natural world. This topic has arisen from a call to Bard faculty to #MakeClimateAClass: Bard faculty are urged to use our collective power as educators to engage with the climate change crisis.â€Jun wrote to me that he was drawn to my music and asked whether any of my songs might fit within this subject area. At the time I had plenty of songs that spoke of the natural world, but none I could categorize as specifically dealing with the class’ more narrow focus, so I offered to write this song on a poem by one of my favorite poets, Carl Sandburg, who even by the early twentieth century was noting the degradation of the natural environment and its impact on life of all kinds trying to adjust to changed circumstances brought on in one way or another by man. I quickly found the poem Buffalo Dusk, seeing how strongly it speaks of the extinction of species and the loss that represents. Jun and his teachers remarked what a “beautiful and sad poem†it was, so in short order I was pleased to present this song to Jun, who gave Buffalo Dusk its first performance in April of 2023 at the Bard Conservatory.

Small Ensemble B-Flat Clarinet,Bass Clarinet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1028052 Composed by Sarah Hersh. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 59 pages. Burbury Lane Music #3368591. Published by Burbury Lane Music (A0.1028052). River Music is a fun and accessible piece that has received much positive feedback in the clarinet world and has been performed many times, including at the International Clarinet Association's ClarinetFest. It is an approximately 8 minute piece for two Bb clarinets and bass clarinet that would be equally at home on an environmental-themed concert or any other type of program. It is a relatively advanced piece but has been performed by high school students. River Music was written for Clarinets for Conservation.Program Note: River Music was inspired by my time one summer spent on the Chattahoochee River and at the Chattahoochee Nature Center near Atlanta, Georgia. I have always had a connection to bodies of water, having spent many summers and weekends at the lake by my grandparents’ house in New York. While sometimes I feel like an outsider as a New Yorker living in the South, as soon as I got on the river, canoeing down the Chattahoochee, I felt at home again. Something about the river reminds me of my childhood on Lake Peekskill, and River Music was partially inspired by that connection.Once I started writing the piece, it took on a life of its own, as water and nature (and composing) often does. One reason I’ve always felt strongly about environmentalism and protecting our natural environment is that all of it – the trees, the earth, the rivers, the lakes – has been here long before we came along and started messing it up, and it will (hopefully) be here long after we’re gone, as long as we make sure to protect these natural spaces and wilderness areas. I often think about how much trees have seen, and as I wrote this piece I started thinking about how much the river has seen too. I hear stories in River Music, and to me it’s the river telling us some, though certainly nowhere near all, of its stories.Perhaps River Music will take you, the listener, on a journey down the river-not just through space, but through time. You might hear some of the same stories I hear. Or you may not. Part of the beauty of writing a piece inspired by a river is that I hope you hear in it whatever the river means to you.Note: The sheet music includes a score, regular set of parts, and a bonus set of parts that include a partial score underneath the main part. The composer is a member of ASCAP and may be reached at www.sarahhersh.com or sarahhershcomposer@gmail.com.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1027138 Composed by Eric Glick Rieman. Concert,Contemporary. Score. 5 pages. Eric Glick Rieman #506331. Published by Eric Glick Rieman (A0.1027138). PIano/ Late Intermediate, 2015 Piano Contest Program Note: A Cosmopolitan Nightmare of Wildland Manners 2014, Eric Glick Rieman Denizens of urban environments often feel a distinct distrust of wild lands, having been taught the paranoid fantasies of their elders about that which is perceived as wild(think - the big, bad wolf.) Wild lands represent a frightening metaphor for urban dwellers, that of both their lack of ultimate control, and the reality of each individual's smallness in relationship to the vastness of Wilderness. Plus, there is no place to buy Cheetos at the last minute when one is hungry in a Wilderness. Or have a texting conversation with your grandmother about the proximity of the aforementioned wolf. This in spite of the very real dangers of a standard walk in the park in a modern city. This piece begins with calm and simple melodic patterns, which are then stretched and bent into a slight and non-specific feeling of dis-ease, perhaps akin to the mild discomfort of your basic, entitled, urban Metrosexual when exposed to the vastness of a more natural environment. copyright 2014, Eric Glick Rieman/Water Goes Into The Air (sole proprietorship), ASCAP The MP3 clip performance is by Anastasia Reshetekhin.

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.999879 Composed by William P. Gorton. 20th Century,Concert,Patriotic. Score. 3 pages. William P. Gorton #6116537. Published by William P. Gorton (A0.999879). Freedom's Cost is a beautiful lament on the price that has been paid by the few for so many, full of irony. With an 18th-century text by William Collins, this art song has been written with the style Schubert in mind (it was a Composition Modeling class project I completed when working on my doctorate). Haunting and lugubrious, it captures the essence of the ironic text. This would be great material for a faculty or student conservatory recital, or a public art song concert. Very accessible for less-experienced singers, yet providing plenty of depth for interpretation.

Wind Orch - Advanced - Digital Download SKU: F2.FM640 Composed by Keiron Anderson. Full Wind Orchestra. Score and parts. 240 pages. Forton Music - Digital #FM640. Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM640). ISBN 9790570485390.This music begins with Alice and he sister relaxing in an English summer garden in the sunshine. As we hear Alice's theme a white rabbit appears and runs past in a hurry. The compound time chase sequence leads to a descending chromatic sequence which lands Alice in a pool of tears as her music adjusts to the strange environment. The Cheshire Cat and other creatures appear in her journey through Wonderland until she joins the Mad Hatter for tea. His slightly chromatic theme dodges from key to key until Alice encounters the military march of the Queen of Hearts and her army. There is a reflective theme as Alice's music tries to cheer up the sad Mock Turtle followed by a lively Lobster Quadrille The trial scene is a musical interaction between two themes often played across one another until a fanfare declares Off with her head! As Alice grows and rises to the garden her music takes her home safely. Was it a dream? Like Alice herself, this intricate work is curious, slightly mad, and will lead you on an exhilarating journey through wonderland. Its designed to be enjoyed by players and audience alike and is a sparkling addition to any programme. Approx. 11'30''.

Piano,Vocal,Voice - Digital Download SKU: A0.913979 Composed by Arthur Breur. Pop,Rock. Score. 8 pages. Floating Home Music #4780747. Published by Floating Home Music (A0.913979). This piece was commissioned by Annette Saarinen for her granddaughter Aurora, who happens to be studying chemistry (among other things) so she can pursue her goals of working on environmental restoration.Composing a song that is a gift for a friend's granddaughter is fraught with a number of perils, particularly when one of the inspirations is that the recipient of the song likes Adele tunes. Adele's songs are mostly romantic songs about lost or unrequited love, so the lyrics couldn't really come across as being FROM the grandmother.Knowing that Aurora is studying chemistry, however, gave me a clue as to how I could make the piece work nicely: make it sound like a love song about the chemistry between two people, when in fact, the lyrics are talking about how our use of chemistry is both responsible for the state of our environment and the means we must use to fix it.I did use my usual trick of starting with words or names, and have composed both Aurora and Chemistry into the notes of the piece, the former in the accompaniment, and the latter as the foundation for the verse melody.Duration: 3m54s.

He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)Long before pandemic prisoned us,the trees knew how to guard their placewith roots and shade.Moss found how to hug a stone for life.Every stream knows how to move in place, stay home and yet flow outward, sending bounty far.Now is our time to practice-now to sing from balconies, now send words of comfortby any courier, now to hoard lonesome generosity-and then to shine in all directions like stars.Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. The nature soundtrack features sounds of the Oregon forest, stream, and night sky.Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Katherine FitzGibbon, Bailey Dean, Chris Clark-Johnson, Kim Stafford, and the Lewis & Clark College Community Chorale. Contact the composer to obtain the audio file of the nature soundtrack.Copyright © 2021 Adrienne Inglis | adrienne.inglis.com
