But the probably most prominent Hindemith pupil wrote much more valuable educational music: In the years 1960 to 1996 he created '8 Little Studies for String Orchestra' which are brilliant miniatures of medium difficulty dealing with special musical issues, such as dotted rhythm or change of time. The pieces can either be played separately or be formed into little suites. They are perfect for the work in school, hobby and amateur orchestras. And in spite of all educational intentions: This is enjoyable music which is fun to play!

Published by JB Linear (A0.581751). Gioachino Rossini is known for his delightful Italian operas, especially the overtures, like William Tell or The Barber of Seville. Early in his life he composed a set of 6 Sonatas for String Quartet. Later, Frederik Berr, a clarinetist known by Rossini, arranged the quartets for winds (c. 1820). This setting for clarinet duet by John Gibson uses Berr's arrangement but with a considerable amount of editing needed for the only edition currently available. The music overall is not difficult, however there are sections for each instrument that require a fair amount of technique. A score is provided, however it is better to play from the individual parts due to page turn issues.

The poems are as follows: The clocks move tonight. Nothing moves but the clocks. The Universe stays the same. Then why does darkness drag in early? Why the days go damp and dreary? Like an unkind remark turning beauty to hurt, the wind ransacks the pink blossom. A new tree starting out managed the first inch up and the first inch down; it was not to be the minority who make maturity. A leaf clings with all it has to the tree: Falling is painless.

Robert Schumann (1810 – 1856) was an influential German music critic and composer who was troubled by mental health issues for much of his life.  Schumann’s enthusiasm for music was evident at an early age but he was discouraged from pursuing this as a career and encouraged towards the law instead.  Ultimately, music won out and Schumann began studying piano with Friedrich Wieck, whose daughter Clara was later to become Schumann’s wife.  After damage to one hand affected his playing ability, Schumann turned his attention to musicology and composition. Träumerei (Dreaming) has been described as one of the most famous piano works ever written.  It is one of a collection of short pieces, entitled Kinderscenen (Scenes from Childhood) written in 1838.  This arrangement for mixed woodwind duo of clarinet and bassoon would make a charming feature piece at a wedding, anniversary or recital.
