Choral Choir (3-Part Mixed) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1170258

By Hubert Gregg. By Hubert Gregg. Arranged by V.Firnberg. 20th Century,Folk,Historic,Singer/Songwriter,Traditional. Octavo. 6 pages. Virginia Firnberg #770612. Published by Virginia Firnberg (A0.1170258).

This upbeat 3 part choir and piano classic about London (UK) was composed in 1944 by Hubert Gregg who was a pre-war broadcaster for the BBC. It begins imaginatively by setting the scene with street cries from a London market accompanied by the piano. What follows is a rousing unison rendition of the song, (perhaps the audience could join in?), then a solo trio, and, with the addition of a counter melody, the piece comes to a close. The song tells the story of someone who is taking a walk in London and is in love with the place. I worked with 'The Three Valleys Male Voice Choir' to come up with the street cries, as some of them had been market traders back in the day.

“God Rest You Merry, Gentlemenâ€
is a traditional English Christmas carol dating to the mid 17th Century. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol†but with the lyric:

“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!
May nothing you dismay!â€

The phrase “God rest you merry†historically meant “may God grant you peace and happinessâ€. “Rest you merry†was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Julietâ€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.

“Pat-A-Pan†is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu†for the sound of a flute.

“Yigdal†is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Upon hearing Yigdal, English Methodist Thomas Olivers adapted this melody for use in his Christian hymn “The God of Abraham Praiseâ€, which is a paraphrase of the ben Judah doxology, and was first published in 1772.

“Merry! Don’t You Know?†is a playful melding of these sacred songs, acting as a reminder that Christmas is a time to be merry and joyful as we celebrate the nature, power, and love of God.

Composed by John Hilton (1599-1657). Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Lent,Sacred. 14 pages. Con Spirito Music #6329603. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.726119).

Wilt Thou Forgive That Sin? are the opening words to the poem, A Hymn to God the Father, written by the English poet, priest, and scholar John Donne (1572-1631). A theologically rich and poetically masterful text, it presents an appeal to God, in which Donne asks Wilt thou forgive? the original sin into whch man is born (stanza 1) and the personal sins of the individual (stanza 2), and in which he acknowledges his own fear of death and his hope of salvation through God's Son, Jesus Christ (stanza 3).

Donne commissioned a tune to accompany the hymn from the English early baroque composer John Hilton (1599-1657), of which Donne's friend and biographer Izaak Walton said, he caused it to be set to a most grave and solemn tune, and to be often sung to the organ by the Choristers of St. Paul’s Church, in his own hearing....

Donne's hymn is especially fitting for penitential seasons (Advent, Lent) and occasions, and this arrangement for brass quintet of Hilton's tune makes an effective meditative selection for offertory or communion at any time.

SKU: A0.910422

By Charlie Parker. By Charlie Parker. Arranged by David Heywood. Jazz. Score and parts. 63 pages. David Heywood #5203399. Published by David Heywood (A0.910422).

Donna Lee by legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker falls in to the category of a contrafact,
or the recycling of an older tune using a new melody with the same chord changes.
In this case, Parker used an old tune from 1917 called Indiana, or Back Home Again in Indiana,
improvised a new melody over it, and the rest is history. This medium-up tempo swing arrangement
features flute quartet (Four C Flutes) and rhythm section, and uses a paraphrase of the original
tune in combination with Parker’s melody in the head and a canon with the same melody in the head
out. All instruments get the opportunity to solo, and there is a flute soli section after blowing
that pays homage to another contrafact done on the same tune by Horace Silver. Not an
easy chart, but well worth the effort!
