 The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!

 I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.

 â€ƒAs with those exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.

• Choose a tempo

• Choose a dynamic.

• Choose an articulation/style.

 One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.

 Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping 5 lines to play the same set in a new key.

 If you want an additional challenge in terms of range, play them in different octaves to expand the set. 

 Additionally, you can change the Key. Play them in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.

 The variations are endless!

 All Donut Etudes with the same version number are compatible so you can play them in mixed duets with one person on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2.

For example, if you play the F Major example in Tenor Clef, change the key signature to C Major and you have a version that is based an octave higher than the C Major version as written later.

 The variations are endless!

Looking for something different? How about some thing VERY different? Here is the 1931 Duke Ellington classic It Don't Mean a Thing (if It Ain't Got that Swing) done as a drum feature, with a very modern harmonic approach and aggressive melodic ideas. This fast swinging chart starts with energetic solo drum time, then the entire flute ensemble trades eights (as a soli based on motives from the melody) with the drums for two choruses before a brief statement of the melody. This is followed by open solos over the original changes, and an open drum solo. The chart then transitions to a half-time swing free-for-all with fragments of the melody flying in all directions, capped of by a brief return of the opening section. Not for the faint of heart, and definitely not the same old jazz flute choir experience! Scored for piccolo, five C flutes, alto and bass flutes, piano, bass, and drums, with optional guitar.

2017 Holiday Contest Entry

We Three Kings is on Peaceful Solo Piano Christmas 2, Louis Landon's 25th album/CD and 18th solo piano album.

Louis Landon is a composer and Steinway artist. Formerly of New York and currently living in Sedona, Arizona, Louis has dedicated his life to music. His career has taken him around the world playing a variety of styles with some of the most recognized names in the entertainment industry. He toured nationally and internationally, playing classical music for Mikhail Baryshnikov; jazz fusion with The John Payne Band; Latin music with Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers; pop music with Rupert Pina Colada Song Holmes; and rock & roll with John Hall, opening for Little Feat.

Louis began playing the piano by ear at 4 years old and began lessons at 5. As a teenager, he played guitar and keyboard in bands and went on to study music at Stony Brook University, Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.

For the past 30 years, through his production company, Landon Music Company, Louis has written and produced music for film, video, and commercials. He recorded his first original album, Love Songs & Jazz, in 1994 and has since released 38 Albums/CDs on the LCI Record label. His latest, entitled Provocative Piano, was released on January 29, 2021. He has just finished up yet another solo piano album, Nighttime Piano for Relaxation and Deep Sleep, with a release date of April 23, 2021.

It's about a calf being led to slaughter, written originally by Sholom Secunda and Aaron Zeitlin, the Yiddish title is Dos Kelbl (The Calf). The great singer Joan Baez made the song popular when she first recorded it in 1960. Listen also to her amazing versions to this day. Also I am deeply impressed by the version of Einat Betzalel & L'Orchestre Festival (also on YouTube).
