Composed by Keith Mansfield. Arranged by Kevin Riley. 20th Century,Film/TV. 33 pages. Kevin Riley #1046894. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1468652).

Keith Mansfield (born 1941 in London, England) is a British composer and arrangerknown for his creation of prominent television theme tunes, including the Grandstandtheme for the BBC.

One of his library music recordings, Teenage Carnival, was used as the theme to the cult 1960s ITV children's television series Freewheelers. He has also composed film scores for British movies such as Loot (1970) and Taste of Excitement (1970), and the western Three Bullets for a Long Gun (1971). He also scored the start-up and shutdown themes for Granada Television in 1978, which were used for ten years before it switched to 24-hour television.

By Friedrich Fritz Kreisler (February 2, 1875 – January 29, 1962). By Fritz Kreisler. Arranged by Keith Terrett. Classical,Contest,Festival,Historic,Multicultural,Romantic Period,World. 15 pages. Keith Terrett #1026496. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1446730).

Sicilienne and Rigaudon for Solo Violin & Pianoforte.

The Sicilienne and Rigaudon is one of the many pieces that violin virtuoso Fritz Kreisler composed in the style of other composers. When he first presented and published these pieces, he offered them as recently discovered works by those other composers, newly adapted and arranged by himself. In the case of Sicilienne and Rigaudon, it is eighteenth-century French violinist/composer François Francoeur whose name is on the title sheet, though the piece really has nothing to do with Francoeur's style.

The piece is a simple and a charming one, however. The Sicilienne is a binary-form miniature that sweeps along on a characteristic dotted rhythm, with a rather melancholy melody. Think old French ballet. The constant 16th notes of the Rigaudon, give it a character quite unlike that of a traditional rigaudon-a cheerful Baroque dance movement in duple meter.

And Can It Be That I Should Gain? is a Christian hymn written by Charles Wesley. And Can It Be was written in 1738 to celebrate Wesley's conversion, which he regarded as having taken place on May 21 of that year.

This beautiful hymn has been popular and enduring.

And Can It Be That I Should Gain is perhaps one of the most joyfully poignant hymns penned by Charles Wesley (1707-1788). On Whitsunday (Pentecost), May 21, 1738, three days before his brother John experienced his heart strangely warmed,’ Charles was convalescing in the home of John Bray, a poor mechanic, when he heard a voice saying, In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, arise, and believe, and thou shalt be healed of all thy infirmities. The voice was most likely Mr. Bray’s sister who felt commanded to say these words in a dream.

Anglican hymn writer Timothy Dudley-Smith, notes that the following then happened:

Charles got out of bed and opening his Bible read from the Psalms: He have put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God, followed by the first verse of Isaiah 40, Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. He wrote in his journal, I have found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in the hope of love Christ (Dudley-Smith, 1987, 1).

The statement from Mr. Bray’s sister sparked within Charles a conviction like he had never felt before. Moved and convicted in spirit, Charles wrestled with these words until he came to rest in his faith, knowing that it is by faith we are saved (Ephesians 2:8).

Soon after this conversion experience, he wrote two hymns in celebration of the amazing love he had come to know: And Can It Be that I Should Gain and Where Shall My Wondering Soul Begin? (United Methodist Hymnal, 342)

There has been some debate as to which hymn was written first, but most current scholarship accepts the latter as the first hymn written by Charles after his conversion experience. No matter its place in the chronology of Wesley's output, And Can It Be has been and remains one of his most remarkable hymns, expressing like no other the rapturous joy of receiving salvation.

By Blue Oyster Cult. By Donald Roeser. Arranged by Des McNutty. Contemporary. Score and parts. 29 pages. Des Press #6632339. Published by Des Press (A0.977363).

(Don't Fear) The Reaper was Blue Öyster Cult's best known single and their biggest hit. Written and sung by lead guitarist Donald Roeser, (Don't Fear) The Reaper appeared on the album Agents of Fortune in 1976 in a longer version and is considered one of the all-time rock classics of all time. Remember folks, that's ALL TIME; not just Halloween.

You can find out a lot more about Blue Öyster Cult on their official website here: http://www.blueoystercult.com/

This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription in the same tonality as the original recording, so you could even play along with it for fun.

N.B.: There could have been more markings, such as accents, in the 'cello part. Driving your quartet's rock-groove is at the cellist's discretion.

The level is on the easier side of advanced; quickly rehearsed by professional quartets and an accessible challenge for experienced students.

Enjoy!

DAS ESELLIED (The Donkey Song) is a classic Oompah band song from the early Oktoberfest days.

The Bavarians love this song more than anyone in the world. They call it the Donkey Song, but the Germans call it Das Esellied. There’s even a yodeling chorus to the song.

The song tells the story of a donkey waiting for his love Veronica, who is also another donkey.

This Intermediate Level tune is perfect for your next Oktoberfest gig. It includes an optional D.S. al Fine to extend the performance time.
