The Malaguena is an emotional song using an ostinato of VIII, VII, VI, V in minor with an improvised melody. The Polo is moderate dance with three beats per measure with hemiola rhythms. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Both the painting and the poem create the feeling of a magical place where beauty, joy and pleasure abound. It is a mysterious place, perhaps as occurring in a dream, yet a place where one does not wish to leave. In The Land of Wonder-Wander begins quietly with vague tonality and sparse instrumentation as it transports the listener into this mystical land. As the tempo becomes stricter and the instrumentation fuller, the beauty of this place is apparent. A change to a triple meter and a faster tempo creates a joyous and wondrous section as there are many sweet treats growing to satisfy the soul. Children scampering and playing are represented by an allegro section with playful melodies and slight dissonance. The Dinkey Bird becomes the focus of the next section, which uses a staccato motif surrounded by rapid scales and arpeggios. These ideas build in intensity, expressing the wonder and beauty of this far away land, until they begin to fade away as the land recedes into the sea. A last flourish occurs as if one is trying to hold on to the experience before one wakes up from this marvelous dream.

This work was composed for John Hardisky of Temple University. The work is in three movements that are linked together. The first movement is an Allegretto and is in sonata form. It is contrapuntal and syncopated. The second movement is song-like and is in 5/4 meter. A short cadenza links this movement with the third movement that is primarily in 6/8. It also contains syncopation and counterpoint. A cadenza occurs about two-thirds through this movement. After the cadenza, the work builds to an exciting climax. The work is very tonal and uses several modes for its melodic and harmonic material.

The composition is in three movements with each titled after a different period in Thailand history. The piece is loosely programmatic as it tries to capture the general mood of each era, rather than specific events. I. Sukhothai (The Dawn of Happiness) This movement reflects the ideal state, a land of plenty, and is peaceful. II. Ayutthaya This movement reflects a period of wealth that is characterized by wars with Burma. III. The Chakri Dynasty This movement reflects the more hectic pace of modern society where Thailand moves from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. Folk music of Thailand is built on a seven-note scale of equal intervals. The fourth and seventh notes of this scale are often used only for ornamental purposes. In order to approximate this scale, a pentatonic scale is used as it is like a major scale with the fourth and seventh tones removed. The pre-recorded sounds approximate some of the instruments traditionally used in Thai folk music.
