The first is Frogs and Toads and begins with sounds of a swamp before moving to an allegro section with lots of leaps. The second is Salamanders and makes use of a short chromatic idea that represents the salamanders swimming. A slower section, representing the endangerment of some species, follows. After a return to the opening material, a triumphant ending portrays the success of conservation efforts.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755253). Emoticons III is the third in a series of compositions that are designed to be aural representations of images that reflect emotions. This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet.I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness.II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality.III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement.IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation.V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds.VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction.VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound.VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.

Instrumental Duet Bass Trombone,Instrumental Duet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755280 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 47 pages. Sy Brandon #4886103. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755280). Adages II is the second in a series of compositions based on familiar sayings. It is composed for Dr. Joseph Murrell and is for bass trombone and piano. There are five movements in this composition. 1. Strike while the iron is hot – This movement is in a fast tempo with a lot of syncopation and irregular meter change. The piano frequently plays two loud chords that indicate the striking. 2. Opposites attract – The opposites in this movement are a swing style and a classical style. Each has its moments to shine and yet one clearly influences the other. 3. Stop and Smell the roses – This movement is lyrical representing the beauty of smelling roses. A motif that contains rests is a reminder to stop and take time for the beautiful things in life. A contrapuntal middle section with steady sixteenth notes builds in intensity as another reminder that one needs to take time from the hectic pace of life to enjoy beauty. 4. Curiosity killed the cat – This movement is mostly soft, staccato, and furtive representing the curiosity of the cat. A loud chord or succession of chords indicates the cat getting into trouble. This happens a total of nine times representing the cat’s nine lives before the cat is finally doomed. 5. Look before you leap – As the adage implies, there are a lot of melodic leaps in this movement. Any scalar material or repeated note figures serve as a warning to look before one leaps.

Concert Band - Digital Download SKU: A0.733028 Composed by Marc Oliver. Arranged by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings. Praise & Worship,Sacred,Spiritual. Score and parts. 42 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347283. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733028). Almost everybody and his mother on the Planet have written their own arrangements of Amazing Grace so I guess I should not be the exception. Amazing Grace (And Then some) is written for Solo Tuba, accompanied by a wind band. I was inspired to write this chart by a young man named Brandon Jones who lives in the Mobile, Alabama area. He was about 20 years old at the time of this writing (in 2012). He wanted to dedicate it to his father who had died when Brandon was about 4 or 5 years old. My arrangement of Amazing Grace (And Then Some) is not just another theme and variations type of work. Instead, I have interwoven two additional hymns (Praise to the Lord, the Almighty and I Will Sing of My Redeemer) in order to break up the monotony of just the one hymn (hence the subtitle And Then Some) Oh, did I mention that Brandon plays a C tuba that was passed down from his father?

Small Ensemble Alto Saxophone,Multi-Percussion,Piano Accompaniment - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755123 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 33 pages. Sy Brandon #3396747. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755123). Cycle of the Spheres honors those who lost loved ones in the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The title reflects both the living earth upon which we live and the fortitude of humanity. The first movement depicts serenity interrupted by bombastic resemblances of earthquakes and tsunamis. The second movement was a hymn song for the souls of the dead and is called Ashes to Ashes as it represents a different cycle, one of death and rebirth. A song of redemption and hope for the survivors is the theme for the third and final movement Resiliency of the Spirit.

Brass Ensemble Euphonium,Tuba - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.755334 Composed by Sy Brandon. 20th Century,Contemporary. Score and parts. 48 pages. Sy Brandon #6607353. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755334). I. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. The interpretation of this adage is that one always wants what someone else has instead of accepting one’s own uniqueness. During the movement, counterpoint is used to depict one instrument copying another. Towards the middle of the movement, tuba 2 eventually realizes its independence and states a bold melody of its own. The movement ends with the euphonium 1 playing its melody alone with pauses between the phrases as if looking over its shoulder wondering where the other musicians are. II. Absence makes the heart grow fonder. This setting represents a growing love despite the emptiness of being apart. Hollow intervals of fourths and fifths representing longing, occur at the beginning and end. A short love duet between two instruments occurs in the middle. III. Time flies when you are having fun. A rollicking six-eight meter is used to represent a children’s game of tag. There is a lot of alternation of short phrases as if one instrument is trying to tag the other and the other is trying to avoid being tagged. The dissonance and short accented notes represent taunting. IV. Every cloud has a silver lining. This movement is a prayer-like setting with alternation of minor and major harmonies representing the cloud and the silver lining respectively. V. He who hesitates is lost. This movement is very rhythmic and syncopated with the instruments alternating phrases in the manner of a call and response. It calls for split-second precision between the performers, therefore representing the adage. VI. A rolling stone gathers no moss. The last movement is a perpetual motion in a rolling six-eight meter. The musical ideas are very chromatic with the exception of main theme that appears first as a solo melody, then as several instruments together, and later as instruments in imitation. Towards the end, there are a few brief pauses and low accented notes as a life of activity has a few bumps along the way.

Woodwind Ensemble Bassoon,Double Reed Quintet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1201729 Composed by Brandon Nelson. 20th Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 38 pages. Brandon Nelson #800345. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.1201729). In this piece (the first of an open-ended series of pieces), I explore four pharmaceutical agents, imagining how their effects on one’s body might be translated into sounds. The work opens with a prelude, which exhibits the primary melodic materials the rest of the piece is built upon.Ciprofloxacin is one of the most commonly prescribed antibiotics. I envision a “battle†between the drug and the offending bacterium, much as it occurs in the course of treating respiratory tract infections and urinary infections. In Albuterol, I begin the movement with rather “breathless†figures that gradually calm and end in wide open respite. Albuterol is best known for treating exacerbations of asthma, which relaxes bronchi that have become inflamed. When blood pressure becomes too high, this can cause a number of life-threatening conditions. One drug commonly used to bring blood pressure under control is Metoprolol, which acts on a number of bodily systems to “slow things down.†In this movement, I depict this gradual releasing of tension both in rhythmic figuration and in tempo. The final movement presents Modafinil, part of a relatively new class of drugs known as eugeroics. Essentially a stimulant, modafinil promotes wakefulness and is claimed by some to increase energy level and mental clarity. In this closing movement, I depict one of the less pleasant side effects of this stimulation: the jitters.

Instrumental Duet Clarinet,Instrumental Duet,Vibraphone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.912928 Composed by Brandon Nelson. Concert,Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Brandon Nelson #2082127. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912928). This work is based on the book by the same title. In it, one Abraham of Wurzburg, an aspiring medieval mage and devout Jew, describes a tour that he made of points in Europe and the Middle East, searching for a mentor who would not turn out to be a charlatan (or worse). Abraham eventually finds such a figure in a small town on the banks of the Nile. Here he meets the great magician Abramelin, whose system of magic Abraham sets out in detail. What results is the present volume, which puts forth a complete course in ceremonial magic (both white and black). In Abramelin’s system, after a lengthy period of self-purification and prayer, one may call upon one’s Holy Guardian Angel, who will then instruct one further on how to conjure up the princes and demons of Hell to do your bidding. The crux of this involves using certain special squares of anagrammatic words that would compel the conjured demon to perform specified tasks. In this piece, I take five of these squares and depict them in colorful, virtuosic tone paintings. (Learn more about me at bnelsonmusic.wordpress.com).

Flute Choir,Woodwind Ensemble - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1449511 Composed by Sy Brandon. 21st Century,Chamber,Contest,Festival. 45 pages. Sy Brandon #1029267. Published by Sy Brandon (A0.1449511). Cascades is a three-movement composition for flute choir that represents both the waterfall definition of the word and the mountain range in the Pacific Northwest. The first movement represents Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. It drops 635 feet in two tiers. The music has cascading musical figures as well as sense of power and beauty. Mt. Hood is the inspiration for second movement. Standing at 11,249 feet above sea level, this majestic mountain is dramatically visible from the valley floor and is snow covered most of the year. The music of this movement depicts the rising from the valley floor with its low to high orchestration. The almost symmetrical shape is represented by descending lines after the two climaxes. The third movement is a reminder of the relatively youngness of the Cascade mountain range. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area and loss of lives. What remains of this former symmetrical mountain is a large crater as a reminder of the volatile nature of the Cascade Range. The music of this movement is filled with tension, from the seismic tremors of the first part to the eruption itself in the second part. A final cascade, this time depicting lava flow rather than a waterfall, brings both the movement and the composition to a close.
