The Evening-Watch was written in 1925, when Holst lived in Thaxted, England having had to temporarily leave his teaching duties because of overwork and illness. This setting of Henry Vaughan’s ‘Dialogue between the Body and the Soul’ was too  austere for listeners of its day and it remained out of print for thirty years, until 1965. Its mood of calm strength and passionate resignation sounds as if it belongs to the 1960’s.  This beautiful arrangement for 8-part trombone choir by Ronald Baron seems altogether appropriate given the instrument’s vocal character, its frequent use for music at funerals and Holst’s other musical passion; his short career as a trombonist. The 4 minute piece is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

The C major Romance is a tender, adagio cantabile movement full of beauty, requiring grace, poise and elegance to perform properly.  It has been said that it could have been titled Song Without Words, the music being so lyrical of character. 'Romance' may have been written as a slow movement to a Violin Concerto that  was never completed.  This arrangement by Gordon Cherry is a wonderful addition to the Tuba & Bass Trombone repertoire. Almost 10 minutes in length, this work for advanced performers will be a great addition to any recital.

The movement is a love duet between the Soul and Jesus (Trumpet 2 and Horn) with the top part as an obligato over the bouncy bassline. William G. Whittaker calls it a cantata without weaknesses, without a dull bar, technically, emotionally and spiritually of the highest order, its sheer perfection and its boundless imagination rouse one's wonder time and time again. (Wikipedia). Keith Terrett has beautifully arranged this gorgeous movement for a standard Brass Quartet of 2 Trumpets in B-flat, Horn, and Trombone (with f-attachment).
