They All Laughed is a song composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, written for the 1937 film Shall We Dance where it was introduced by Ginger Rogers as part of a song and dance routine with Fred Astaire. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements and we added some pretty cool left-hand fills, as well! The original recording was released as a single in 1969 and reached No. 4 in the UK charts and No. 19 on the U.S. Billboard top 100. Townshend once called it the most clumsy piece of writing he'd ever done. Nevertheless, the song was a commercial success and remains one of the most recognized tunes from the opera. The alternate refrains and different sets of verses make it work at multiple liturgies at which Psalm 19 is appointed. Both assembly and choral writing is very singable. Allensbank (with an E – Canadians will understand, especially when they hear the section reminiscent of The Maple Leaf Forever) is a March originally written for Brass Band by Hugh Vaughan Wallis. It is in typical British March style. This arrangement by the composer is for standard Concert Band. Allensbank is a suburb of Cardiff, Wales where the composer’s ancestors farmed in the late 1800s, so the name seemed especially appropriate. Additionally, the name “Allen� has significance as being the name of the lake on which he owns a cottage, where some of the work on this march was done. Having received positive reviews of the work from such contemporary Brass Banding greats as Bob and David Childs of Cory and Black Dyke fame he has arranged it for both Wind Band and Brass Sextet.

I wanted this piece to convey the feeling of the shared warmth of having family and friends meeting over the festive season when everything is done, and now it’s time to enjoy!Written in Concert C major the introduction begins with a bell- like Christmas chime settling into the main theme which is almost like a verse and chorus. The piece has two of these sections with a link between the two. The second section is a different treatment to the first as some of the bell like figurations of the opening are incorporated. There is also a mix of staccato and legato phrasing to give contrast. The Chorus part is repeated before a short quiet reflective ending. The range is two octaves at most and there is nothing more complicated than an eighth note- hence it has been set in early intermediate level. I wanted 2 equal instrumental parts. The whole piece is on the youtube link for you to assess suitability. Ideal to be added to a Christmas concert list!3min 15 in length. Price is for score and parts.

In the film, the song is sung by Fred Astaire and Sally Sweetland, who dubbed it for actress Joan Leslie. The orchestra was led by Freddie Slack. My Shining Hour was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song but lost to You'll Never Know. The film was released on July 13, 1943. The song became a hit the following year by Glen Gray's Casa Loma Orchestra with Eugenie Baird as vocalist, reaching No. 4 on the Billboard Best Selling Retail Records chart. The song's title may have been a reference to Winston Churchill's speech to British citizens during World War II: if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, this was their finest hour. This version was developed from a lead sheet and was created so that someone with average ability can play it and sound good doing so. The hymn tune Gelobt Sei Gott (Vulpius) is a very popular Easter hymn, with its joyful Alleluia refrain perfect for the holiday celebration.  There are a variety of texts associated with it, including Ye sons and daughters of the king and The strife is o'er, the battle done.  This festive work was written and recorded on a two manual instrument, and would be a perfect opportunity to feature a trumpet or tuba stop.  I hope you enjoy playing it!

I found the Emily Dickinson poem in early 2014 while searching for inspirational texts. After the first read, I knew I would like to set it to music someday. Later that summer I came across a composition contest that was looking for a piece about success/belief/hope. I started putting music to the text in late September. In October my mother was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and she passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. Her passing affected me in ways I never expected. Music went from being the thing in which I could find solace, to the thing that reminded me of my mother's absence. I found myself unable to write my own music for quite some time. During the Lenten season of 2015, one of the Pastors at the church for which I work gave a sermon using this text. The sermon was particularly moving and I decided it was time to revisit the piece. The music was finished within 1 week. Just as my mother had done for me countless times, writing this piece gave me the hope and inspiration I needed to get through a difficult time in my life. I dedicate this work to my mother, Cynthia Marie Richards.
