A very interesting yet quite sad tale goes with this song. An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this brass band version (and a vocal one) for him. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.

The best-known recording of the song was done by Jimmie Rodgers, which was a gold record. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! It's a fun song and not too hard to play!

An instrumental descant is a counter melody usually pitched higher than the hymn's. It is played by an instrument, usually a trumpet or a flute, with organ accompaniment. The usual form for these instrumental postludes is to play the hymn melody once through and then to play the descant. An instrumental descant always enlivens the singing of hymns, and this volume promises practicality, variety, and well-crafted countermelodies to do just that. The term descant is used to describe a countermelody, generally at a higher pitch than the main melody, and it is typically sung in the final or penultimate verse of a hymn. Although the English Hymnal of 1906 omitted descants, this influential hymnal served as a source of tunes for which the earliest known hymn tune descants were published. Uncle Charles was written for Soundscape Big Band Jazz (São Paulo, Brazil) and is a medium up swing chart based on modified rhythm changes. The chart features an intro that has the bass instruments dueling it out early on. As the composer is a bass trombonist himself, he tends to give interesting and demanding lines to this instrument and Uncle Charles is no exception. On the high end, the trumpets can opt for an 8va Ab phrase if they are feeling brave that day (Listen to Jr. Galante on Soundscape´s recording to hear it well done)! The three soloists (trumpet and two tenors) constantly trade off solos between themselves and the bridge is always accompanied with an improvised second tenor solo (Uncle Charles in the case of SoundScape Big Band Jazz). All this along with wah wahs, plungers and Mingus like effects makes this chart fun and challenging.
