Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card.  And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. La canzone è dedicata alla moglie di Bixio, Mary, detta Mariù.Stefano Pittaluga, che era il patron della casa cinematografica Cines, fu sostituito da Emilio Cecchi e (non senza qualche nervosismo) impose che il film avesse per colonna sonora principale la canzone Taxi (titolo provvisorio anche della pellicola); permise tuttavia che fosse inserita anche Parlami d'amore Mariù, che risultò poi di tutt'altra memorabilità.Durante le riprese, il regista Mario Camerini e Bixio forzarono l'utilizzo del brano: nella scena della trattoria, in cui De Sica balla con la ragazza, doveva sentirsi in sottofondo un organino suonare. Nottetempo e contro l'avviso della produzione, compositore e regista si fecero appositamente realizzare un rullo per l'organino con la musica della canzone; il rullo fu pronto alle sette del mattino e, poco dopo, Camerini sostituì il rullo dell'organino e iniziarono le riprese con quel sottofondo.Pubblicato in origine dalle edizioni musicali di proprietà di Pittaluga, venne in seguito acquisita dal Gruppo Editoriale Bixio.

Dopo il Paradiso composto nel 2020, il secondo libro del ciclo ispirato alla Divina Commedia di Dante riguarda la prima cantica: l’Inferno.Si tratta di musica genuinamente semplice, ma non banale, in quanto penso che la comunicazione diretta con l’ascoltatore si ottiene solo con la semplicità che è molto più spinosa del tecnicamente difficile e veloce; ma soprattutto, in questa semplicità spinosa io ci metto il mio cuore e la mia mente.Ho lavorato molto cercando di trovare un equilibrio fra il pensare troppo e non pensare affatto. Ovviamente all’inizio ho dovuto leggere e riflettere molto sui versi di Dante e cercare nella mia memoria e nella mia anima le sensazioni che i versi producevano in me. Una volta iniziato il lavoro compositivo ho cercato per quanto pensabile che tutto fosse il più spontaneo possibile. Non è stato facile ma posso dire di avere ottenuto quello che cercavo.Queste composizioni appartengono, come d’altronde tutte le composizioni degli ultimi anni, al mio nuovo modo di concepire la composizione e cioè non solo note organizzate secondo logica, ma suoni distribuiti in uno spazio dove il tempo sembra infinito. Un suono che si antepone alla tecnica per curare l’anima. In questo ciclo le composizioni sono racconti musicali, ma allo stesso tempo una sorta di mappa emozionale con la quale coordinare i nostri pensieri.

Nel comporre la musica ho tenuto conto della suddivisione data da Dante alla Cantica, pertanto è presente l’Antipurgatorio, il Purgatorio con le sette cornici ed il Paradiso terrestre. Rispetto alla prima Cantica, il Purgatorio presenta un'atmosfera decisamente meno cupa, più rilassata e serena che si manifesta fin dal primo Canto, all'arrivo di Dante e Virgilio sulla spiaggia nei minuti che precedono l'alba, la mattina della domenica di Pasqua. Se nel comporre la musica dell'Inferno lo stile era spesso aspro e duro, adeguato alla rappresentazione del regno del dolore, quello della seconda Cantica è di tono più leggero ed elegiaco, ovviamente questa leggerezza non è sinonimo di facilità di linguaggio o di esecuzione. Nella terza, quarta, quinta e sesta cornice ho usato gli stessi temi dell’Inferno riferiti alle omologhe pene, ma rielaborandoli con armonie e strutture diverse rendendoli meno scuri e più rasserenanti. Mentre per le restanti parti lo sviluppo tematico è stato concepito completamente con idee nuove. Unica eccezione riguarda l’ultimo brano, il Paradiso terrestre, dove oltre al tema concepito, verso la conclusione del brano e precisamente nelle ultime cinque battute, ho introdotto il tema di un noto corale protestante utilizzato anche dalla chiesa latina dal titolo: “Noi canteremo Gloria a Te�. Nella partitura ho indicato anche la scelta dei registri e la dinamica la quale indicazione o suggerimento non risulta vincolante. Pertanto ciò non vieta che l’esecutore attraverso il suo buon gusto possa apportare delle modifiche nella scelta dei registri in considerazione anche dell’organo dove andrà ad eseguire la composizione. La gestazione dell’intera Cantica è durata all’incirca 7 mesi. Le prime battute le ho scritte il 13 marzo del 2022 mentre la fine della composizione ha visto la luce il 22 novembre dello stesso anno. Il Purgatorio chiude il ciclo compositivo organistico dedicato alla Divina Commedia dantesca, iniziato nel 2020 con il Paradiso per poi proseguire nel 2021 con la stesura dell’Inferno. Tre anni di intenso lavoro cercando di poter far “parlare� i brani all’ascoltatore in maniera diretta, curandone il suono che anteponendosi alla tecnica alimentano l’anima. Si tratta di musica autenticamente semplice, ma non banale, in quanto penso che la comunicazione diretta con l’ascoltatore si ottiene solo con la semplicità che è molto più “spinosa� del tecnicamente difficile e veloce. Ma soprattutto, in questa semplicità “spinosa� io ci metto il cuore e la mia mente.

La raggiungo dopo aver attraversato per un tratto lo sterrato della Valle Bresciana dopo aver superato l'ultima collina, avamposto della natura che domina Urago Mella, il primo quartiere situato tra il parco e il fiume Mella della città. Il percorso nel parco che seguo di solito ha la forma di Otto o, se si vuole, dell'infinito.
