Above all, the three Nachspiele op. 1, which he dedicated to three Hamburg citizens in the early 1830s, can be related to this early period; they were probably written after Katterfeldt's master apprenticeship with Christian Heinrich Rinck in Darmstadt. Later active in Schleswig, Preetz and Schwerin, this famous Sonata for Organ was printed by him in 1885, whose introductory section is inconceivable without knowledge of the virtuoso organ style of the Buxtehude tradition.

This Pavan (later included in The Fitzwilliam Virginal Book) is the first part of the famous Pavan and Galliard (The Lord Salisbury), which has become one of his best-known compositions to have entered the present-day repertory. It has been performed and recorded many times, most notably perhaps by Glenn Gould in 1970.

Johanna Müller-Hermann (1868-1941) was born in Vienna and after several years as a primary school teacher returned to music studying with a number of teachers including Alexander von Zemlinsky and Josef Foerster. As a composer she wrote a large number of chamber, vocal and orchestral works and enjoyed much success during her lifetime. She became a professor of music theory at the New Vienna Conservatory in 1918 and much of her music was published by Universal Edition and Musikhaus Doblinger. Zwei Frauenchöre mit orchester op. 10 sets a text by Friedrich Hebbel (1813-1863) and a German translation of a poem by the Danish writer Jens Peter Jacobsen (1847-1885). The work was first published by Universal Edition in 1915.
