The Bird Song is a piano solo arrangement of the 1899 hit pop song by Carrie Jacobs-Bond, which was originally a ballad for voice and piano.  This is mostly a new composition inspired by the Jacobs-Bond piece.  I took the tune's 8-bar vocal melody and changed several of the notes then put it in the Left Hand.  In the Right Hand I created twittering birds.  The ending section elongates the final cadence into a dozen measures of twittering and posturing, followed by a Coda in a new Time Signature of rest and twittered farewells.  This makes a simple, delightful, lilting dance.  1 page score; 1:20 minutesThis piece is also found in my book, Carrie Jacobs-Bond, Popular Songs 1900-1925, a collection of 51 of her songs I have arranged for piano solo, which is also available on this site.

Swinging Shepherd Blues is a well-known tune by Moe Koffman, originally titled Blues a la Canadiana and renamed Swinging (or 'Swingin') Shepherd Blues in l957 when it was recorded by the composer, playing the flute, for the LP Hot and Cool Sax. Among more than 300 recordings of the tune are versions by Count Basie, Herbie Mann, Mantovani, and David Rose. A vocal rendition, with lyrics by Rhoda Roberts and Kenny Jacobson, has been recorded by Ella Fitzgerald, and more recently by Natalie Cole. The tune has also been recorded by various Canadians, from Oscar Peterson to the Edmonton Youth Orchestra. Koffman used Swinging Shepherd Blues as his signature tune until 2000. This arrangement is playable by SATBBs Saxophone Quintet with substitute parts for Soprano (1st Alto), Baritone (2nd Tenor) and Bass (2nd Baritone). The original melody was Soleado, a tune from 1974 by Ciro Dammicco (alias Zacar), composer for Italy's Daniel Sentacruz Ensemble, and Dario Baldan Bembo. The tune was based on Damicco's earlier tune Le rose blu published in 1972. The English language lyrics were written a few years later by Fred Jay (Friedrich Alex Jacobson). They do not make specific mention of Christmas. Fred Jay's lyrics have been sung by many artists, most successfully by Johnny Mathis in 1976, whose version was the Christmas number one of that year in the UK. [Wikipedia] This is an arrangement for the Concert Band with an Optional Vocal and Chorded Piano part (Not shown on the score). It can also be used as an instrumental featuring a solo on the Trumpet and the Oboe. There are parts for both Euphonium TC and BC, Tubas in C, Eb, and Bb.
