This solo feature for a quintet's trumpeter or cornetist is from the Golden Age of concert bands at the turn of the 20th century composed by legendary Sousa Band soloist Hebert L. Clarke. Clarke's impressive setting of Carnival of Venice remains the most frequently performed version of the theme and variations cornet solo first made famous by Arban. To contrast the cornet soloist's pyrotechnics is a humorous trombone and tuba accompaniment that enlivens the listening experience. A flugelhorn/trumpet alternate part is provided for the horn part. Playable using either B-flat or C trumpets, these two brilliant, short fanfares for two trumpets from 1921 by Manuel de Falla and Erik Satie exhibit two contrasting compositional approaches. The Falla Fanfare for a Festival is reminiscent of his dramatic opening trumpet and timpani fanfare to his Three-Cornered Hat and can be an exciting concert prelude featuring band or orchestra trumpeters and percussionists. Timpani parts are included for use with either C or B-flat trumpets. The subtly humorous Sonnerie by the eccentric, but influential French iconoclast, includes translation of Satie’s witty written commentary for the duet. Careful execution of the highly edited music will enliven the musical humor and performers will be amused with his score comments. Both fanfares have individual parts and a duo score. You don’t have to be an emperor to admire these three regal and stately fanfares composed for an elaborately staged Equestrian Ballet at the Hofburg Imperial Palace in Vienna highlighting the 1667 imperial court marriage celebrations of Emperor Leopold the First to the Infanta Margareta of Spain. Performed in its day by court trumpeters with valveless instruments and a pair of timpani, each fanfare announced with a different articulation style a new portion for the choreographed cavalry Equestrian Ballet. Accessible for students using B-flat or C trumpets and with timpani parts in both keys, they provide useful material for ceremonies and programs, even an exciting opening work to a band or orchestra concert featuring the trumpet section. This royal fanfare for the 1498 coronation of French King Louis XII is a three-part canon over a slow cantus firmus theme based on the letters in Vive le Roi (Long Live the King). Though five centuries old, it remains an exciting and brilliant fanfare useful for concerts or ceremonies.
