The Lucy space mission will be the first to study the Trojan asteroids orbiting Jupiter. The mission takes its name from the fossilized human ancestor (called “Lucy� by her discoverers) whose skeleton provided unique insight into humanity's evolution. Likewise, the Lucy mission will revolutionize our knowledge of planetary origins and the formation of the solar system. This piece uses the “Lucy Motif� in explicit and obvious ways, like in the opening, and more subtle, less obvious ways that the listener and performers can discover, much like the Lucy satellite itself as it discovers more about outer space.
