Program notes: My good friend Jason Baker asked me to write these works. Each is inspired by one of his children. Landon, the elder child, was just an infant when Jason asked me to write a kind of lullaby for him in 2008. Julia, the younger sister, was already a feisty toddler when Jason asked to to add another movement for her a decade later.

The Fantasy for Five Trumpets was commissioned by the members of the Alabama Trumpet Guild Ensemble for performance at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference: Dr. Joe Ardovino (University of Montevallo), Dr. Mark DeGoti (Auburn University), Dr. Michael Huff (Troy University), Dr. Peter Wood (University of South Alabama), Dr. Eric Yates (University of Alabama)Dr. James Zingara (University of Alablam at Birmingham) The work is in a sonata form. The first theme is marked by repeated open intervals which are ornamented. The second theme is in 7/8 and contains a heroic melody. Moving Prelude (2004) is in a rondo form (ABABA). The sections alternate between a heavy, rhythmically driven idea and a serial idea with a variety of textures. The title Lacerations refers to the jagged, angular lines used throughout the piece and the ‘cut and splice’ technique of juxtaposing disparate musical ideas. Despite the title, no musicians were injured in the writing of this piece. (I make no promises about the performance, however!)

Krista Riggs commissioned this work. I had heard her performed the great Sequenza Vii (for solo oboe) by Berio and she asked if I would write a similar type of work for solo English horn. It is broadly in two sections. The first is a virtuosic kaleidoscope of extended techniques occasionally interrupted by fragments of a more calm idea. The second section is a resolution of the first, providing an extended treatment of the calm, melodic idea.
