Each of the scales required for the improvisers is a melodic minor-derived scale, giving the whole piece an air of both openness, with the wide melodic intervals, and also a darker color, with those chords and scales in play. The main statement segues directly into a mixed soli that alternates tutti and mixed soli sections. Then, it's on to the blowing choruses, each with the background.
