Nature Boy was a number 1 hit for Nat Cole in 1948, and soon became a jazz standard.  Over the years it was also recorded by Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn, Geroge Benson, and more.  The song, written by Eden Ahbez, was his song about himself.  This Big Band jazz arrangement stays true to the melody, but in a Bossa Nova style.  The song seems to be made for this Latin style.   It allows the band to feature the Flugel Horn, which also fits the dark and brooding mood of the piece.  A trumpet can be substituted.  There are short solos for Tenor Sax and Tronbone, and a Hard-driving Ensemble section before the arrangment returns to the Flugelhorn.   Your drummer should have fun with this- but it is important that the drummer knows how to p0lay the Bossa Bova rhythm, which is written out in the part.

It became a standard song among jazz musicians, especially after Miles Davis recorded it. There is a wonderful version recorded by saxophonist  Cannonball Adderly on his 1955 album “Cannonball Adderly With Strings”. PERFORMANCE NOTESSurrey With the Fringe on Top is a 32-bar AABA form in the key of concert B flat. In this arrangement, the A-section melody features several tongue-in-cheek grand pause moments. These are indicated by fermatas over quarter note rests. Have fun with these spots, varying the length of time you pause, which can done with a comical effect. The solo section at bar 37 is open to any player, and a set of notes is provided for improvisation. The backgrounds at 41 are to be played each time, and the solo section can be repeated as necessary for additional solos. The shout chorus at bar 47 should be played at full volume. Be sure to investigate and balance the chords among the wind instruments.  The shout chorus winds down with a call and response between the brass and saxes.I hope you have fun with this classic tune!

Besides being a blend of Celtic and jazz styles, this piece has a number of unusual features. Structurally, I think of it as AAAB. The first A is 5 bars, the second A is 3 bars (transposed up a half-step to Ab), and the third A is 3 bars (transposed back to G). The B part, 9 bars in length, has a sudden change to E for the first 3 bars. Then, the chord progression becomes harmonically vague -- including a shift from major 7th chords to V9 sus4 chords. Shifting time is used throughout the piece with single or multiple bars of 6/8 interjected into the 9/8. While it has some quirky touches, this is music with a driving and joyful spirit. The chart features an intro that has the bass instruments dueling it out early on. As the composer is a bass trombonist himself, he tends to give interesting and demanding lines to this instrument and Uncle Charles is no exception. On the high end, the trumpets can opt for an 8va Ab phrase if they are feeling brave that day (Listen to Jr. Galante on Soundscape´s recording to hear it well done)! The three soloists (trumpet and two tenors) constantly trade off solos between themselves and the bridge is always accompanied with an improvised second tenor solo (Uncle Charles in the case of SoundScape Big Band Jazz). All this along with wah wahs, plungers and Mingus like effects makes this chart fun and challenging.
