SKU: A0.811265

Composed by Jean Sibelius. Arranged by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 6 pages. Gordon Cherry #6704605. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.811265).

Romance for Trombone and Organ, Op. 78, No. 2 is from 4 Pieces for Violin and Piano by Jean Sibelius, composed around 1915 during the Great War. It is a staple of the violin repertoire. The wistful character of its very hummable melody is a great example from the age of parlor music, composed for amateur performance in the home and enjoyed by all ages.

This 3 ½-minute work has been beautifully arranged for Trombone and Organ by Niels-Ole Bo Johansen.

There are two versions included with this arrangement: one for advanced performers that goes up to high D's and another for intermediate performers in bass clef and with a moderate range only to high G.

Here’s a lovely new arrangement of this traditional Finnish Christmas carol. The lyrics were written in 1887 by Zacharias Topelius and set to music by Jean Sibelius in 1909. This is perfect for an elementary class or a beginner choir to perform. There is one vocal part, one piano part, and chord names for guitar or other instruments to accompany with. It is presented in the key of F and there are two pages in the score. The duration is approximately three minutes if you sing all three verses.

Composed by Justin K. Reeve. Arranged by Justin K. Reeve. 20th Century,Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 6 pages. Justin Kenlon Reeve #6620113. Published by Justin Kenlon Reeve (A0.1001500).

In the late 1600s and early 1700s, Germany was predominantly Lutheran and experiencing a religious movement known as the Pietistic Revival. The Pietists emphasized living a virtuous Christian life, and encouraged their followers to express their devotion by writing hymns.

Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel was part of this movement, and likely came from an aristocratic family. She also may have belonged to an evangelical women’s seminary. Born in 1697, Katharina was a talented published poet and penned at least 20 hymns, including Be Still, My Soul. The text was sung to many different tunes, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it was paired with its current melody.

Johann Julius Christian Sibelius, later known as Jean Sibelius, was a Finnish composer and violinist credited with having helped Finland create a national identity in the early 20th century during its struggle for independence from Russia. In 1899, he wrote a symphonic poem as a covert protest against Russian censorship. While much of the piece is energetic, representing the Finnish people’s national struggle, toward the end the serene melody of Finlandia is introduced. Finlandia became a national favorite when Sibelius reworked it into a standalone piece. Sibelius composed prolifically, but he also spent time reworking many of his old compositions. In 1927, Katharina’s hymn text was paired with Finlandia, and it remains the most well-known musical melody for the hymn today.

By Miriam Stockley. By Jean Sibelius, Miriam Arlene Stockley, and Miriam Stockley. Arranged by Dominic McGonigal. Contemporary. Octavo. 3 pages. C8 Music #4361823. Published by C8 Music (A0.924059).

The classic Sibelius tune Finlandia has become the unofficial national anthem of Finland. This jazz arrangement is a new twist on a classic, prompted by a kid in one of my ensembles saying, why don't you do a jazz version of Finlandia - so I did. The tune comes out well, with the same sense of pride mixed with poignancy. It's suitable for intermediate singers and above. I can do bespoke arrangements for other combinations on request. See www.dominicmcgonigal.com

Finlandia did not originally have words. Finnish lyrics were added, written by V A Koskenniemi. They were accepted by Sibelius as the official libretto in 1942.

The English words are from a hymn We Would Be One written for the Unitarian Universalists.

This arrangement has both Finnish and English words.
