Frere Jacques (Are You Sleeping?) is a French nursery rhyme and children’s song, composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau (1683-1764), and arranged for beginner to late beginner piano. This traditional piece was composed by Jean-Philippe Rameau.  It has been arranged here for beginner orchestral string ensembles.   This piece has been changed to MINOR to give it a creepy and sad feeling.  Perfect for Halloween performances.  It is also a great instructional tool to educate kids about counterpoint/ harmony and musical structure.  It starts with both lines in unison to help students adapt to each other in a group setting. Midway through the piece breaks into a round to teach about harmony and structure.  

This composition is intended for beginner orchestral string ensembles.  The score, violin 1 2, cello 1 2, can be purchased separately.  All parts contain both lines of music and can stand on their own.  (example: a group of violas will only need this file).

The Overature to one of Rameau's most famous works.  Here's a little music history for you.

Dacier's examination of contemporary newsletters (nouvelles a la main) allows us to follow the shifting opinions almost day by day.  There was a solid body of Rameau supporters - they were nicknamed ramoneurs, a word which means chimney-sweep - determined to applaud the opera at all costs and turn its performance into a triumph.  And there were the usual discontented reactionaries, with the old complaints of discordant harmony and no melody - the stock-in-trade of musical anti-modernists at all periods.  The work was so stuffed with music, they declared, that for three whole hours no one in the orchestra had time even to sneeze.

Rameau was a French composer and music theorist in the early part of the 18th Century who was known for using unusual instruments, one of the which was the Tambourin, a small flute popular in his operas. Rameau composed TAMBOURIN in honor of the tiny flute which you can hear throughout the piece. This arrangement is for INTERMEDIATE STRING TRIO (two violins and cello) and is great fun to play as the melody moves back and forth among the players. A solo sheet for each instrument is included with the score.

Jean Philippe Rameau (1683-1764) was a French theoretician of music and a composer. His theoretical works provided the scientific basis for the development of traditional, functional harmony in the 18th century. His operas were the first national creations to rival those of Lully.

Le Tambourin was originally a keyboard piece. Arranged here for Brass Quintet, it makes for a lively addition to any concert or recital. Makes a great quick encore.
