This song was inspired by Patti Callahan's novel, Once Upon a Wardrobe.  If this book had a soundtrack, this is my idea of it.  It's a story of faith - faith in finding meaning, faith in a beloved story, and faith even in the face of loss.  The song reflects the magic inherent in the stories of Narnia (Callahan's novel centers around C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia) and the hope of an ailing little boy to find out where the story comes from.  It lends emphasis to the idea that although the Narnia stories are fiction, there is indeed much to be found therein that IS real.  And as a young mathemetician surprises herself to find meaning in something not based in logic, so does the listener realize that even when we think we have found the truth of where the story begins, we are only just beginning and there is more to find.

This song is about the relief of being alone with yourself.  I imagine a young woman sinking down to the floor in her apartment after returning home from being out with people, which causes anxiety for her.  The song is also about getting to truly know and love oneself and recognizing the peace we all have within us, regarless of our flaws and mistakes.

This intermediate/ advanced arrangement of Joy to the World intersperses original melody with the classic Christmas hymn.  It is meant to set the scene of a dark, anxious, and weary world desperate for the arrival of a Savior.  The original melody builds from sadness to hope, and at that moment the beautiful chords of Joy to the World begin, like the light of Christ's arrival breaking onto a dreary world.

To me, Joy to the World perfectly reflects both the sentiments of Christ's birth AND His second coming - I wanted this arrangement to be relevant to people now.  So many of us are desperate for the saving, the peace, and the healing that only He can give.  The world feels dark and scary, represented by music mixed throughout the piece, but Christ's coming truly brings joy to the world - magnificent, majestic, and genuine joy.  It did then, it does now, and it will in the future.  

This arrangement combines a sense of the world's darkness with the sense of Christ's triumph.  It is complex and majestic in parts, but sweet and simple in others.  And after a grandiose climax, the simple ending is meant to bring us back to where it all began - in the humble setting of a stable in Bethlehem.

This arrangement begins with a much darker tone than the original.  The tempest is truly raging.  The tone is angry and desperate.  The piece follows an individual from confusion and anger, to hearing God's voice assuring him, Peace, be still, followed by a sense of enlightening and acceptance.  While the storm is still raging at the end (represented in the left hand accompaniment), a new-found peace triumphs (represented by the melody in the right hand).

This is an intermediate/ difficult level piece, written in the key of A flat major, with LOTS of accidentals and naturals.
