Conjeturas sistemáticas (Systematic conjectures)

 for piano four hands

A piece composed in Bremen (North Germany) between 8th and 10th March 2013, about 4 minutes long, and dedicated to Mario García Acevedo in memoriam (who died on March 6, 2013 in Buenos Aires).

The title alludes to a phrase that Mario García Acevedo said en passant during a lecture in SADAIC remembering the twentieth anniversary of the death of Rodolfo Caracciolo:

True science is a set of systematic and ordered suspicions.

I altered this thought slightly, because systematic suspicions seemed to me a more suitable title for a detective novel.

Musically speaking, this piece uses modulating pandiatonism, a technique that I used in several other pieces as well.

Mario García Acevedo was one of those few people who can be said to have been wise in the most complete and overwhelming sense of the word. He was one of my teachers at the (ex) National Conservatory of Music, I no longer remember teacher of what, because he was the kind of person who was an integral teacher, not of this or that. I had the pleasure of performing the European premiere of his work Amanecer in Bremen in 2008. Marito delivered a speech during the burial of Juan Carlos Zorzi, ending with the words Maestro: Until the Resurrection! Let his words be also valid for him.

Arranged wind quintet

Arranged standard wind quintet.

Lyric Pieces (Norwegian: Lyriske stykker) is a collection of 66 short pieces for solo piano written by Edvard Grieg.

They were published in 10 volumes, from 1867 (Op. 12) to 1901 (Op. 71).

The collection includes several of his best known pieces, such as

Wedding Day at Troldhaugen (Bryllupsdag på Troldhaugen),
To Spring (Til våren),
March of the Trolls (Trolltog), and
Butterfly (Sommerfugl).

This is an arrangement of Lyric Pieces Op.54 No.1 Gjetergutt
K/A Shepherd's Boy in English.

Tempo marking is Andatino in 6/8
My arrangement is NOT tutti throughout.

The melody is shared out amongst flute oboe and clarinet.

A beutiful tune for your quintet.

Grieg later arranged four of the pieces from Op.54 as his Lyric Suite for orchestra.

Grieg slightly altered the order of the numbers in the orchestral suite by swapping No. 4 Notturno with No. 3 March of the Dwarfs. The final order of this is:

1. Shepherd Boy
2. Norwegian March
3. Notturno (originally No. 4)
4. March of the Dwarfs (originally No. 3).

check out my other Grieg arrangements.

Composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Arranged by Peet du Toit. Contemporary. Score and parts. 11 pages. Peet du Toit #5801391. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.802574).

Samba do Avião (a.k.a. Song of the Jet, translated literally as Airplane Samba) is a Brazilian song composed in 1962 by Antônio Carlos Jobim, who also wrote the original Portuguese lyrics. The English-language lyrics are by Gene Lees.

In the biography Antonio Carlos Jobim: An Illuminated Man, Helena Jobim describes how her brother came up with the idea for the song: Tom's many walks from Ipanema to Santos Dumont Airport yielded that ode of beauty... He would head towards the airport, following the water's edge around Guanabara's Bay. The pretext to go there was to buy foreign magazines and newspapers. From Santos Dumont Airport he could observe his passion, the airplane. Yet he still kept some distance from those machines. He was afraid of flying, but he loved their power, splendor, and aerodynamics-man's conquest over machine.

In the song, Jobim writes about landing at Galeão in Rio de Janeiro. The airport was renamed in his honor in 1999 and is now called Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport.

Jobim wrote Samba do Avião for an Italian film, Copacabana Palace (1962), where it was performed by Jula De Palma and I 4 + 4 di Nora Orlandi. The movie was filmed in Rio and features cameo appearances by Jobim, João Gilberto and Os Cariocas.

The first performance of the song was by Jobim and Os Cariocas in August 1962 at the Au Bon Gourmet restaurant in Copacabana, Rio, at what music historian Ruy Castro calls the bossa nova show to end all bossa nova shows, as it featured Jobim, João Gilberto, Vinícius de Moraes and Os Cariocas on stage together for the only time.

The first recording of the song was released in October 1962 by Elza Laranjeira. Os Cariocas had a hit with their rendition in 1963.

The first English-language version was by Tony Bennett for his 1965 album If I Ruled the World: Songs for the Jet Set.

Here is my brass quintet version of the song for your enjoyment.
