A Christmas Carol (2009) from Walt Disney Pictures with Jim Carrey in the role of Scrooge is a magnificent and much loved masterpiece, an instant holiday classic.  With a cast including Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins and Cary Elwes.  The song echoes the last words of Tiny Tim and the crowning song sung by Andrea Bocelli, but written by film music legend Alan Silvestri (Back to the future, Polar Express among many others)  builds on that phrase as its opening line to create a joyful epic anthem.

This version requires a tenor or soprano soloist with the option of SATB chorus, and emulates the original soundtrack but set in a lower key since few singers necessarily have the vocal capacity of Bocelli to ping out a routine top B.  A version will be available on this site in the original higher key for the braver subscriber.

We commend this song (and arrangement) to any event organisers of a large scale Christmas or church orchestral event, or a film concert any time of year.  It is a magnificent modern classic.

Tanzsaal, or The Ballroom, is the dramatic antepenultimate piece from the musical Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires). Composed by Jim Steinman, with a book by Michael Kunze.

Transcribing Tanzsaal for concert band was both a challenge and an exciting opportunity to bring this theatrical masterpiece into a new context. Though it contains elements from the 2019 Berlin Cast Recording, the majority of the material is transcribed from the original 1997 Vienna Cast Recording. Most of the original string parts have been given to the saxes and lower clarinets. The upper woodwinds retain the expanded ornamental material from the Berlin production. 

Two of the melodies prominently featured in this piece are recurring themes throughout the show. Gott ist tot” (God is dead) and Totale Finsternis (Eternal Darkness) appear as both their own numbers, and as incidental melodic material. English listeners may recognize these as Original Sin recorded by Pandora's Box and Meatloaf, and Total Eclipse of the Heart recorded by Bonnie Tyler and many others.

Dave Brubeck?s iconic composition which featured on his 1959 album ?Time Out?, has been carefully scored for standard saxophone quartet by Jim Fieldhouse.

Brubeck, often regarded as one of the leading artists in the cool jazz movement, was inspired by the sound and rhythmic feel he heard when he encountered a group of Turkish street musicians. Blue Rondo was based upon the Turkish Aksak rhythm, and is written in 9/8 grouped as 2+2+2+3 for three bars followed by a 3+3+3 bar.

In a conversation between Brubeck and these Turkish musicians they reportedly said that the aksak was to them what the blues was to western musicians, and so the title for the piece “Blue Rondo a la Turk” came about.

This arrangement requires attention to detail, rhythmic precision and good dynamic control in order to drive the music forward with a light and lively feel and build to the big moments in the score where the ensemble can really let rip!
