Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to express your comments or concerns. The Impossible Dream (The Quest) is a popular song composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics written by Joe Darion. The song is the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical Man of La Mancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name starring Peter O'Toole. The complete song is first sung by Don Quixote as he stands vigil over his armor, in response to Aldonza (Dulcinea)'s question about what he means by following the quest. It is reprised partially three more times – the last by prisoners in a dungeon as Miguel de Cervantes and his manservant mount the drawbridge-like prison staircase to face trial by the Spanish Inquisition. A version recorded by Jack Jones peaked at No. 35 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart.

The song is the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical Man of La Mancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name starring Peter O'Toole. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills that we hope you will like! It's a pretty song and not too hard to play!

By Man Of La Mancha. By Joe Darion and Mitch Leigh. Arranged by Phyllis Avidan Louke. Broadway,Film/TV,Musical/Show,Standards. 12 pages. Louke Publishing #715479. Published by Louke Publishing (A0.1113567).

Low Flute Ensemble The Impossible Dream from Man of La Mancha Program Notes The Impossible Dream (The Quest) is the most popular song from the 1965 Broadway musical Man of La Mancha and is also featured in the 1972 film of the same name. The song was composed by Mitch Leigh, with lyrics written by Joe Darion. It was awarded the Contemporary Classics Award from the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. I have always found the lyrics of The Impossible Dream extremely moving: To dream the impossible dream To fight the unbeatable foe To bear with unbearable sorrow And to run where the brave dare not go To right the unrightable wrong And to love pure and chaste from afar To try when your arms are too weary To reach the unreachable star This is my quest To follow that star No matter how hopeless No matter how far To fight for the right Without question or pause To be willing to march, march into Hell For that Heavenly cause And I know if I'll only be true To this glorious quest That my heart will lie peaceful and calm When I'm laid to my rest And the world will be better for this That one man, scorned and covered with scars Still strove with his last ounce of courage To reach the unreachable star This arrangement for Low Flute Ensemble can be performed with as few as 5 players or a full flute choir with multiple players on a part. It is scored for 3 alto flutes, 2 bass flutes, and optional contrabass flute.
