HONKIN’ HORNS by Joe Procopio HONKIN’ HORNS is an exclusive solo for two saxophones based on the shuffle beat - known as the Shag down South. It is exciting Dance Music with a swing feel and was extremely popular in the Fifties. The Shag is still popular in the Carolinas and remains the State Dance for South Carolina. HONKIN’ HORNS has the sound literally of two saxophones honking wonderfully together - almost wildly. There are very few saxophone solos for two saxophones that are as much fun as HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYIN’ SAXES. They offer great listening pleasure and are a delight to play. People love to dance to this music. Speaking from personal experience, I have never found any saxophone music that gives more pleasure to playing, listening and dancing than HONKIN’ HORNS and CRYING’ SAXES. The music here is written for Two Alto Saxophones or for Alto and Tenor Saxophone with a small quartet Piano, Guitar, Bass and Drums. A SPECIAL COLLECTION EDITION OF HONKIN’ HORNS AND CRYIN’ SAXES IS AVAILABLE FOR ONLY $14.95.

Composed by Traditional Mexican. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (ASCAP). Folk,Latin,World. Score and parts. 6 pages. Joel Jacklich #6717923. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.726262).

Adiós, Mamá Carlota is a song from the Mexican Civil War, when the Mexican peasants rose up to fight against the Emperor Maximiliano. The Carlota referred to in the title and refrain, is the Empress Carlota, who fled to Europe seeking aid for her husband (without success). While she was in Europe, her husband was captured and executed. The words by Vicente Riva Palacios (1832-1896) are a parody on the song Adiós, Oh Patria Mía by Ignacio Rodríguez Galván. The accompaniment is scored for two requintos, guitar, and string bass. A requinto is a small (3/4 sized) melody guitar that is tuned a fourth higher than the normal guitar. If a requinto is not to be found, the parts can be played on regular guitars.

This piece is often played during Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) celebrations. Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrating the Battle of Puebla in 1862, when the peasant army of Mexico defeated a superior force of the mercenary French Imperial troops of Maximiliano. The holiday is not often celebrated in Mexico, but is more often celebrated in the United States among Mexican-Americans in the Southwestern United States.
