La Philippine, H. 96 (Wq. 117/34) is one of dozens of short character pieces of great charm written by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), oldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. As a composer, CPE Bach occupied an interesting transitional space between baroque and classical music and certainly helped to usher in the stylistic traits of the latter into general popular usage. The piece here is arranged for classical guitar solo at an intermediate level. It is more a transcription than a true arrangement, and every attempt has been made to keep the music as close to the original as possible. All fingerings are editorial, and ornaments kept simple. However, many expert pianists embellish these ornaments (sometimes very lavishly), particularly on repeats, and expert guitarists will likely want to do the same. Since the original music was written an octave higher, and to be played on the delicate-sounding keyboard instruments of the 18th century, some guitarists may want to experiment with using a capo to better create a more period-appropriate sound.Bach marks the style as Arioso (between an aria and recitative). In terms of tempo, various keyboardists interpret it very differently. Some play it quick and light while others opt for a slower, more lyrical approach. Guitarists should feel free to experiment with what sounds best on their instrument.

The preludes are in the key of C major and are among Bach's most famous works. They are short pieces, each lasting about two minutes in duration. Each prelude is a miniature, self-contained piece with its own musical ideas and themes. The preludes demonstrate Bach's mastery of counterpoint and his ability to create complex, interesting musical textures. The first prelude is simple and joyful, while the second prelude features a fugue. The third prelude is a chromatic, slightly more serious piece. The fourth prelude is a bright, joyful piece with a lot of counterpoint. The fifth prelude is quiet and contemplative, and the sixth is more lively and upbeat. These preludes provide an excellent example of Bach's mastery of the Baroque style.

Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme(Awake, the Voice is calling us) also known as: Sleepers AwakeBach composed his church cantata Wachet auf (BWV 140) as part of his second annual cantata cycle covering the entire annual church calendar. It is based on the hymn of the same name by Philipp Nicolai (1599). The hymn text covers the readings for the 27th Sunday after Trinity. Bach designed the cantata in seven movements, setting the stanzas in various forms. Among these forms are the chorale fantasia, the chorale prelude, and a four-part chorale. He casts the new lyrics as recitatives – in a manner similar to the opera.Fourth MovementBach writes the fourth movement, Zion hört die Wächter singen (Zion hears the watchmen singing), in the style of a chorale prelude with the chorale phrases performed as a strict cantus firmus. The phrases seem to enter at times erratically against the famous lyrical melody. The violins play this melody in unison as a foil against the cantus phrases. The violin melody is so independent and complete that when the cantus melody appears it catches the listener at times totally off-guard. Bach later transcribed this movement for organ (BWV 645). This transcription became No. 1 of the Six Schübler Chorales.
