The Hungarian Dances (German: Ungarische Tänze) by Johannes Brahms (WoO 1), are a set of 21 lively dance tunes based mostly on Hungarian themes, completed in 1879. They vary from about a minute to five minutes in length. They are among Brahms's most popular works and were the most profitable for him. This arrangement is scored for Brass Quintet and makes a lively and exciting addition to any concert or recital. Dances 1, 5 and 6 comprise the mini suite. Not for the faint of heart, the arrangement is well worth the effort. ( Duration - 8:57 ).

Another collection in the series of arrangements of lieder of the German Romantik for voice and string quartet by Reimann (6 Songs Op. 107 by Robert Schumann, ED 8329 and Franz Schubert's Mignon, ED 8466, have already been published). The nearly aphoristic Ophelia-songs keep closely to Brahms' original - a different compositional approach to the one in the Mendelssohn adaptation below, where songs and fragments are interspersed with longer, deliberately contemporary intermezzi and the whole forms an extended cycle.

Brahms’ Lullaby is one of the most well-known pieces of classical music. This tranquil cradle song perfectly captures the peace and innocence of a parent singing their child to sleep. The Brahms Ten Studies were originally written for Horn or Trumpet and were first published soon after his death in 1897. Unfortunately there is not much written about the origins of the Studies. There are questions as to whether they are original or manufactured by an enterprising musician. In my opinion, a few of the studies, especially the slower ones have the stamp of the Master on them. Mr. Cherry believes that the Studies are authentic. It is fairly certain that Brahms’s father did play some horn and there is a good chance that Johannes performed in a horn club as well. The Studies were all originally written in the key of C treble clef. Mr. Cherry has taken the liberty to transpose many of them into different keys for musical variety and technique. This is a common practice for many Trumpet and Horn study books. He has also added some breath marks and alternate slide positions. Many thanks to friend & colleague, Ralph Sauer, who helped with the editing of these studies. These studies are all in bass clef and appropriate for performers of intermediate level and higher.

Die Nonne und der Ritter (The Nun and the Knight), Opus 28, No. 1 for Alto & Tenor Trombones with Piano accompaniment by Johannes Brahms was written as part of a four-song set published in 1863 and dedicated to Mrs. Amalie Joachim a noted German/Austrian contralto. She was the wife of violinist Joseph Joachim and friend to Clara Schumann and Brahms.

The song, beautifully arranged by Elliot Chasanov for Alto and Tenor Trombones with Piano accompaniment, is subdued, haunting and very lyrical. The form is A-B-A with an agitated middle section returning to the mysterious quiet of the beginning.

The almost 6-minute work is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.
