The meter than changes, feeling a little more urgent and a heartbeat is introduced in the left hand which remains for most of the work. This can be interpreted as a fetal heartbeat, the heartbeat of the singer or the listener. It ebbs and flow, becoming at times more urgent and then more restful. The modulation into the third verse is coupled with a key change, intended to convey a stronger, more sorrowful emotion. The work ends in quiet with the person alone. Alone. This is the seventh installment in my Contemplative Spirituals for Piano collection.

A Sextet (1984) was written for the Neighborhood Sax Quartet plus 2 guest saxxists when I was still a member of the Boston composer consortium, Composers in Red Sneakers. The piece however is dedicated to Marilyn Monroe. The sax [sic] symbol of all times!!! It was premiered in Kresge Auditorium at MIT on November 16, 1984, by the YNSQ - Ben Schachter on soprano, Allan Chase on alto, Tom Hall on tenor, Steve Adams on bari - and two guests - Greg Badolato on soprano and George Garzone on tenor. The featured Guest Sneaker at this concert by the Composers in Red Sneaker was John Harbison. In the fall of 1985, the Sneakers gave a New York debut recital at Symphony Space. Bernard Holland wrote in the Times, Thomas Oboe Lee’s Saxxologie ... a sextet for six saxophones distilled the hard-edged sonorities and luscious extended chords of postwar jazz into a hymn of praise to bop. .

I have chosen to arrange Mary Had a Baby as a simple lullaby. The nearly continuous eighth notes symbolize the rocking of a cradle and the gentleness and love a mother feels for her child. The principal melody rarely disappears but it sometimes interwoven with the familiar and traditional Christmas hymns, Silent Night,' Away in a Manger and O Little Town of Bethlehem. This is the eighth arrangement in my Contemplative Spirituals for Solo Piano collection.
