John Coltrane's recording Giant Steps introduced a system of chord progressions and chord substitutions that has challenged even the best jazz musicians. The tri-tonic systems (sometimes referred to as Coltrane Changes) found in the tunes Giant Steps and Countdown is taught in a digestible way thoughout this method. Etudes show how to reharmonize standard ii-V-I changes with Coltrane Changes. The play-along audio will help students practice and master single-note lines over these chords in all 12 keys. Guitarists will appreciate the chord voicing suggestions. A must have for the serious jazz guitarist. Includes access to online audio.

SKU: A0.783976

Composed by Billy Strayhorn. Arranged by John Skillman. Jazz,Standards. Score and parts. 13 pages. John Curtis Music #390426. Published by John Curtis Music (A0.783976).

Originally completed in 1936, Lush Life has slowly gained traction as a gem in the jazz canon. For unknown reasons, Duke Ellington chose not to feature the song until 1948, in a piano/vocal duet live. It was never featured in a commercial recording by the full band. Thankfully, over time more artists picked up the torch of Lush Life--Nat King Cole, trumpeter Harry James, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and a few others. John Coltrane, on a 1958 record date with vocalist Johnny Hartman, reigns supreme in terms of quintessential performances of the song. This trombone choir arrangement (5 tenor + 1 bass) uses a more range-friendly key of A-flat, rather than the original D-flat, but keeps the harmony intact. Some rubato is encouraged so as to make the most of this expressive and harmonically complex, sad and beautiful song. #trombonechoir #billystrayhorn #basstrombone #ballads #johncurtismusic.com.

By John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman. By Guy Wood and Robert Mellin. Arranged by John Fries. 20th Century,Jazz,Standards. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 1 pages. John Fries #732060. Published by John Fries (A0.1131826).

Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns.  You can also type John Fries in the searchbar to see all I have to offer.  The song originated in 1947 under the title Music from Beyond the Moon, with music by Guy B. Wood and lyrics by Jack Lawrence. Vocalist Vic Damone recorded this version in the same year and released it as a B-side to I'll Always Be In Love With You (Mercury 5072), but it was unsuccessful. In 1952, Robert Mellin wrote a new title and lyrics for the song, and it was republished the next year as “My One and Only Loveâ€. When Frank Sinatra recorded it in 1953 with Nelson Riddle, first released as B-side to his hit single I've Got the World on a String (Capitol 2505), it became known as a jazz standard.

An arrangement of John Coltrane's classic Equinox for Brass Quintet with optional drum kit. Equinox is a minor blues jazz standard by American jazz saxophone player and composer John Coltrane. Originally released on Coltrane's Sound[ played in C# minor with a slow swing feel. However, it is usually played in the key of C Minor and often covered on the flute Coltrane’s wife Naima named the song Equinox. The equinox occur twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth’s axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the sun. John Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926, the day of the official autumn equinox of that year. The release of Equinox was delayed until 1964 when Atlantic issued the album Coltrane’s Sound. Before he recorded it, Coltrane performed Equinox several times in live venues, including a session with Miles Davis’ rhythm section and at the 1960 Monterey Jazz Festival. Unfortunately, the other Atlantic recordings of Equinox were lost in the 1978 warehouse fire before they were released.Unlike Naima and My Favorite Things, Equinox would not become part of Coltrane's repertoire. Coltrane's attitude in writing Equinox is described by Dr Lewis Porter as Coltrane was a serious blues player and his blues pieces reflect the desire to get back to a primal mood, and away from the emotionally lighter, harmonically more complicated and complex blues of the boppers. Equinox is introduced by McCoy Tyner and Elvin Jones with a Latin rhythmic passage which shifts into the slower tempo of the theme. The composition evokes a sense of mystery. Coltrane then enters on the horn (a tenor), his playing slow and pensive. The theme is repeated for two choruses and then stating the theme twice. He then proceeds with an improvisation of unusual emotional depth - reminiscent of a preacher exhorting his congregation. Elvin Jones make dramatic use of drum rolls and cymbal crashes throughout the song to maintain the sense of mystery. McCoy Tyner comps with a light feel.

Lazy Bird by Pat Martino was written by John Coltrane and was first released by John Coltrane in  1957. Pat Martino released it on the 1968 album East! Despite the title and the cover of this CD  reissue (which makes it appear that the performances are greatly influenced by music of the Far East),  the style played by guitarist Pat Martino's quartet is very much in the hard bop tradition. Martino was  already developing his own sound and is in excellent form with pianist Eddie Green, drummer Lenny  McBrowne, and either Ben Tucker or Tyrone Brown on bass during two group originals, Benny  Golson's Park Avenue Petite, John Coltrane's Lazy Bird, and the standard Close Your Eyes.  It's a good example of Pat Martino's playing in his early period.

By John Coltrane. By John Coltrane. Arranged by Stephen Davies. Jazz. 23 pages. Stephen Davies #5730583. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891946).

This piece by John Coltrane was recorded in 1960 on Atlantic Records, but was only released 10 years later on the album 'The Coltrane Legacy'. Coltrane based 26-2 on Charlie Parkers 'Confirmation', but altered it slightly using his famous 'Coltrane Changes' system of over writing the melody and harmonies.

Scored for 5 Saxophones, this is not for the faint-hearted!! But should engender some focused practice sessions!

Incidentally, 26-2 was originally an untitled track on the 1960 album, Trane brought it into the studio at the last minute, and after 26 takes on day 2 it was labelled as such by the producer, 26-2, and the name just seemed to stick!

Full recorded MP3 on this site too.
