I Like The Likes of You is a song by Vernon Duke written in 1934 after he returned to the United States from Europe in 1929 with the intention of settling in the country permanently. He composed and published much serious music, but devoted greater efforts to establishing himself on Broadway. Duke's songs April in Paris (1932), Autumn in New York (1934), I Like the Likes of You (1934), Water Under the Bridge (1934), and I Can't Get Started (1936) were 1930s hits. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills just for fun! The song was originally entitled Never No Lament and was first recorded by Duke Ellington and his orchestra on May 4, 1940. Don't Get Around Much Anymore quickly became a hit after Bob Russell wrote its lyrics in 1942. Two different recordings of Don't Get Around Much Anymore, one by The Ink Spots and the 1940 instrumental by Ellington's band. It was written without a commission or for a specific show, but Duke offered it to producer Murray Anderson for his Broadway musical Thumbs Up!. The play opened on December 27, 1934 where the song was performed by singer J. Harold Murray. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. The song was based on the 1917 standard Rose Room by Art Hickman and Harry Williams, which Ellington himself had recorded in 1932. Howard Stern used a recording of this song (from Ellington's Blues in Orbit album) as the opening theme to The Howard Stern Show from 1987 to 1994.
