Shall We Dance is a 1937 American musical comedy film directed by Mark Sandrich - this is the title song from that film. It is the seventh of the ten Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers films. George Gershwin wrote the symphonic underscore and Ira Gershwin the lyrics, for their second Hollywood musical. Tony Bennett also included it on his Steppin' Out LP. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements, we also added what we think are some pretty cool left-hand fills. We hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!

     The Flex Orchestra Series are arrangements that can flex to the instrumentation that is available in your context. This series was born out of a desire to have beginning players participate in worship and play along side more experienced players. These arrangements are written with a melody part in each instrument's clef. The melody part is the same from instrument to instrument with slight variations in register. Along with the melody part is a harmony part or ensemble part. Unlike the melody parts, each ensemble part is unique to that instrument. The piano accompaniment is the glue that holds it all together. This arrangement to be played as a solo with accompaniment, or any combination duet, trio, quartet or quintet with piano accompaniment. By having one or more instruments play the melody part, and then add any other instrument on their ensemble part.

    The melody part is overall the easiest or simplest part. The ensemble parts can be a little more techincal. These techniques would include harder string crossings, and some position work.

      This scoring flexiblity allows less-experienced players of any stringed instrument to play the melody part, and the more-experienced string players to play their instrument's ensemble part. This allows all levels of string players to play together any combination.  

     Jesus Shall Reign is a hymn text by Isaac Watts and was set to music by John Hatton. This triumphant hymn may not be known to young string players so the words to the hymn are written into the melody part of each instrument. While this is unusual to find hymn text in instrumental arrangements, the printed lyric allows us to play with understanding. The melody part can be played all in first position.  Set in the keys of D and G, a modulation allows the players play the tune using different finger patterns, and adds variety to the arrangement while staying in position.
