By age 6 she was playing piano to help support her large family. At age 15, she turned professional, and by the time she was 20, she had made a name for herself nationally not only as a jazz musician but also as an arranger and composer. In 1943, she wrote a piece titled Satchel Mouth Baby, which she recorded the next year with her group, Mary Lou and her Chosen Five. Three years later, Bill Johnson and His Musical Notes recorded Williams’ song after he and Leo Snub Mosley had worked on the lyrics and changed the title to Pretty Eyed Baby. Others would go on to record Pretty Eyed Baby, among them: Frankie Laine and Jo Stafford, Jane Turzy, Johnnie Ray, Peggy Lee and Roy Eldridge.    This arrangement skips along at about 120 bpm. It contains common swing rhythmic figures, and all notes are well within the normal playing range of most brass musicians. Horn in F and Trombone carry the melodic load, but all instruments get a turn at playing lead. This is a fun piece, so don’t be surprised if your audience starts clapping along while you’re playing.    Completed in 2021, performance time for Pretty Eyed Baby runs about 3 minutes,9 seconds. I'll Remember April is a popular song and jazz standard with music written in 1941 by Gene de Paul, and lyrics by Patricia Johnston and Don Raye. It made its debut in the 1942 Abbott and Costello comedy Ride 'Em Cowboy, being sung by Dick Foran. The lyric uses the seasons of the year metaphorically to illustrate the growth and death of a romance. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills to keep things moving along smoothly. The Christmas carol I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day, based on the 1863 poem Christmas Bells by American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, was set to music by Johnny Marks in 1956. Longfellow’s poem tells of the impact of hearing Christmas bells during the American Civil War. Marks, and other arrangers and performers normally omit the mention of the war in their adaptations of the poem. This arrangement uses the complete text of Longfellow’s masterpiece, and through respect to the text, (using choral colors and styles), honors what this arranger considers to be Marks intention, a simple hymn-tune narrative of America in time of crisis much like today. This arrangement in scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 4:15+-.
