The Piano Concerto for piano and large orchestra was written especially for William Koseluk and the Czech Radio Orchestra as part of their historic first American tour in 1998. Mr. Koseluk writes the following about the concerto: “With an intensity and gestural language in the tradition of the Brahms D minor, the Liszt E-flat major and other notable works in the same genre, John Carbon’s Piano Concerto makes an effective new mark in a medium too long overburdened with the piano-as-noise. Indeed, this new work recognizes the piano as melodic and seeks to exploit this instrument in a manner that shows its many riches and colors. This is not to suggest that the work is a throwback to sentiment or a mere example of neo-romanticism. Rather, it is certainly new, with enough complex formal and harmonic constructs – disjunct in the romantic mold – to escape being seen as a return to a bygone era. Certainly, polychordal and dissonant dialogues between orchestra and piano bring this piece to the contemporary field. Serenity, though, and tender melodic consideration are also an important part of the compositional fabric and provide the listener with a rich, varied, experience..

This sermon song was inspired by the second half of the sermon Those Who Came With Jesus by Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida on November 26,2023 using the text Mark 10: 1-31. I used the first groups who came with Jesus were the  Pharisees testing Christ about marriage and devorce, the disciples and the children. In my sermon song Marriage and Children With God I set to the traditional Here Comes The Bride, with a Christian message as apposed to Wagner's pagan opera of origin. This one focuses on the rich man in the Gospel of Mark who, although he kept all of the commandments,  lacked one thing - that he sell all he had and give it to the poor.  With sorrow he departed from Christ because he had many riches. I avoided the eye of the camel referance, but ended with the line For all things are possible with God.For the music, to describe this event, I tweeked my sermon song LOOK, which has been published by Sheet Music Plus. This SATB arrangement can be used as special music by a quartet, a choir anthem or sung by a congregation with its five verses as a hymn.

The song was originally performed in the 1930 film Der Blaue Engel (English translation: The Blue Angel) by Marlene Dietrich, who also recorded the most famous English version, which became her anthem. The English lyrics were written by Sammy Lerner, though they do not include a translation of the original version's most erotic verse. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements. The song that would become White Christmas was conceived by Irving Berlin on the set of the film 'Top Hat' in 1935. He hummed the melody to Fred Astaire and the film's director Mark Sandrich as a song possibility for a future Astaire-Ginger Rogers vehicle. Astaire loved the tune, but Sandrich passed on it. Although White Christmas has become iconic, this was not the original intention. The song Be Careful, It's My Heart, played during the Valentine's Day section of the film 'Holiday Inn', was originally intended to be a bigger hit when production commenced. The success of the song eventually led to another film based on it, 'White Christmas' (1954), which starred Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, and Vera-Ellen. It was an extremely loose remake of 'Holiday Inn', with a similar plot. This arrangement for saxophone choir features all the warm melody and rich harmonies of the original, with nods to another carol along the way.
