The History of the Tune 'Miss Stewart of Garth'

Miss Stewart of Garth is a Scottish reel with a long and interesting history. The tune is believed to have originated in the early 18th century and was likely composed by a Scottish fiddler. African-American writer and civil rights activist James Weldon Johnson is perhaps best known as the author of Lift Every Voice and Sing, written on the occasion of Lincoln’s birthday and now known as the Black national anthem.  He established himself as a writer during the Harlem Renaissance (the African-American cultural movement in New York City in the 1920’s) for his poems, novels and anthologies. This poem Sence You Went Away creates the narrative of one who bemoans the loss of a loved one.  His bluesy poem features a southern dialect style.  It is written for 4-part male ensemble (TTBB) and is performed a capella. Performance time:2:00+  It is an apt introduction to Johnson’s work and most befitting for study during Black History month.

L'amour des trois oranges, Op. 33, is a satirical French-language opera by Sergei Prokofiev. He wrote his own libretto, basing it on the Italian play L'amore delle tre melarance, or The Love for Three Oranges by Carlo Gozzi, and conducted the premiere, which took place at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on 30 December 1921. The 'March' was used by CBS in the radio-drama series 'The FBI in Peace and War' from 1944 to 1958 and also by Prokofiev himself in his ballet, 'Cinderella'. This arrangement uses all the colour of today's symphonic band and would make an excellent programme item in a concert of opera music.

A barn dance is any kind of dance involving traditional or folk music with traditional dancing,
occasionally held in a barn, but, these days, much more likely to be in any suitable building.

The term barn dance is usually associated with family-oriented or community-oriented events, usually for people who do not normally dance. The caller will, therefore, 
generally use easy dances so that everyone can join in.

A barn dance can be a ceilidh (gathering), with traditional Irish or Scottish dancing, and 
people unfamiliar with either format often confuse the two terms. However, a barn dance
can also feature square dancing, contra dancing, English country dance, dancing to country 
and western music, or any other kind of dancing, often with a live band and a caller. 
Modern western square dance is often confused with barn dancing in Britain.

Barn dances, as social dances, were popular in Ireland until the 1950s, and were 
typically danced to tunes with 4
4 rhythms.
