Minka, Minka had derived from the Ukrainian folk tune Ikhav Kozak za Dunaj and was written by Semen Klimovski.  Many composers had adapted this tune for their works, notably Ludwig van Beethoven and Carl Maria von Weber.  This arrangement tries to capture the Eastern European feel that one may characterize (or caricaturize).      

This arrangement started off as an assignment while taking Composing and Arranging for School Bands with Dr. Scott Watson (Alfred, Hal Leonard, Wingert-Jones) at Central Connecticut State University in the summer of 2014.    

Minka, Minka is arranged in band-friendly C-harmonic minor.  A few items to remember:    
- Upper winds have a minor second trill on concert Ab to A?  
- The section starting at 53 should be played as delicate as one would allow.  
- The section starting at 69 should appear to gain momentum.  
- The section starting at 88 should be equal or stronger than it has first appeared.

Jobim wrote the song in late 1966 while staying at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in Los Angeles, as he waited for Frank Sinatra to return from a holiday in Barbados so they could begin recording their album Francis Albert Sinatra & Antônio Carlos Jobim (1967). The first recording of the song was an instrumental version by Jobim for his 1967 album Wave. Sinatra recorded it with Jobim two years later on the sessions for their planned second album, SinatraJobim, which was ultimately released as Side A of Sinatra & Company (1971).

A one movement work in three large sections. The first is a moderato in 5/4 with a lyrical line in the bass trombone surrounded by a sixteenth note motif in the tenor trombone parts. Pyramid effects and recitative like sections comprise the lento second section. This leads to a vigorous allegro in 9/8 and 6/8 to conclude the work. This work is recorded by Sara Albert, Tzu-Yang Chow, Henry Henninger, John McClave, and Justin Clark on the Emeritus label.
