Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1311786 By The Monkees. By John Stewart. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 21st Century,Comedy,Contemporary,Pop,Ragtime. Score. 6 pages. Martyn Johnson #900732. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1311786). This piece should be played with a swing or bounce ie quavers/eighth notes should be played in a ratio of 3:2 to give it a shuffle. I've arranged it in a sort of Stride Piano style and the introduction owes a lot to Fats Waller and his famous waterfall technique. I don't include dynamics or fingering as no two piano teachers would agree on such things I prefer to leave these to the individual player. This is a really fun piece to play and is a tune of great nostalgic value for me. Also note this is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments in my YouTube video but was written as a piano solo and sounds great as such.Hope you get as much fun out of playing it as I have.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1427036 By Billy Williams. By Fred E. Ahlert and Joe Young. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 20th Century,Broadway,Comedy,Jazz,Musical/Show,Ragtime. Score. 8 pages. Martyn Johnson #1007767. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1427036). My arrangement is a tribute to the old Fat's Waller recording. It's not copied from that rendition at all but I have arranged it as a stride piano piece and hope it exudes some of the joy that Mr Waller brought to it.I take it through three iterations in C, Db and D major, going up a semi-tone each time - so plenty of practice in trickier keys. I don't include dynamics in my notation nor fingering and pedalling as I prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist. You will never get two piano teachers to agree on these things. I like to give the reader the notes as simply as possible and leave the interpretation up to them. Similarly with voicings - some notes will be held longer instinctively by the pianist than others and do not need to be placed in separate voicings to make them difficult to read. The stride piano left hand often contains 10ths which can be too large a span for some pianists. The solution is to roll them or to just play them as a single bass note on the root of the chord or as an octave. This is a wonderfully joyous piece and I hope you get as much pleasure from learning and playing it as I did arranging it.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1293722 Composed by Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, and Oscar Hammerstein. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 20th Century,Blues,Instructional,Jazz,Ragtime. Score. 6 pages. Martyn Johnson #884198. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1293722). This is a my piano version of 'A Kiss to Build a Dream On'It is mostly in the key of C major but modulates briefly to Eb for the ending. I have arranged it in a stride piano style. This style of music has evolved from the ragtime of Scott Joplin through the early jazz piano players like Fats Waller and James P Johnson. The left hand can be tricky but it can be simplified by replacing the tenths with single bass notes. It's both a cheerful and sentimental tune. I have included chord symbols which I find as useful as the notation when learning a piece. I haven't included pedal symbols, dynamics or fingering - leaving this as a choice for the player and no two pianist ever see eye to eye on these issues in any event! Please note this is a piano solo only and other instruments included in my YouTube video are not notated.

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1287755 By Martycli Piano Guy. By Martyn Clive Johnson. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson. 20th Century,Comedy,Instructional,Jazz,Ragtime. Score. 7 pages. Martyn Johnson #878830. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1287755). I wrote this piano solo I wrote for a dog I had over 2 decades ago called 'Lucy'. I picked her up from the dog pound and had 10 lovely years with her. I wrote the piece as I only had one photograph of her, I lost many photographs whilst moving house recently. When I first got her camera's on mobile phones didn't exist and I wasn't a keen photographer. Having only one image it made me nostalgic so I decided to write a tune. So instead of having memories in terms of photographs now I've got a musical one to go with the images in my head. It's a happy tune as she was a happy dog that made me laugh many times. It's written in an old fashioned piano style known as 'Stride Piano' which has it's roots in the ragtime of Scott Joplin and found it's peak in the piano stylings of the great Fat's Waller in the 'Roaring Twenties'. The British pianist Russ Conway has some bearing on my style which adds a bounce in the form of reverse 10ths.My notation is simple, I haven't added fingerings or dynamic marks. The tempo mark is only a guide. I do include chord symbols which I often find are the best aide to sight reading. It's a tricky style to master but extra notes in the bass can be left out and single notes alternating with chords will suffice. Hope you enjoy playing it.Please note this is a piano solo only and the other instruments featured in my YouTube video are not notated.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1404521 Composed by Noel Gay and Ralph Butler. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). 20th Century,Comedy,Jazz,Ragtime,Standards. Score. 9 pages. Martyn Johnson #987601. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1404521). This song was written in 1939 by Noel Gay and Ralph Butler and popularised by Flanagan and Allen, the music hall duo. It was written for the Noel Gay show 'The Little Dog Laughed'. It's a fun song that apparently was one of Winston Churchill's favourites. So my arrangement is a tribute to Bud, Chesney and Winston! My version features a left hand stride piano/ragtime style and goes through the keys of C and F major. There are lots of stride idioms and riffs in the right hand from the likes of Scott Joplin, Fats Waller and early jazz styles as well as popular pianists such as Russ Conway and Winnifred Attwell. If you have problems with the 10ths in the bass just play octaves or single bass notes instead or possibly 'rolling' or 'bouncing' them ie playing one note and jumping as quickly as possible to the next so as to play almost simultaneously.I don't notate dynamics, fingering or pedalling and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two teachers ever agree on such matters.Hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1509851 By Billy Jones. By Frank Silver and Irving Cohn. Arranged by Martyn Clive Johnson (aka Martycli Piano Guy). Barbershop,Children,Comedy,Jazz,Ragtime. Score. 8 pages. Martyn Johnson #1085079. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1509851). This is a stride piano/ragtime version of the old vaudeville hit 'Yes We Have No Bananas' by Frank Silver and Irving Cohn. Most famously recorded by the perky Billy Jones. I have embellished it as much as I am able in a style of Fats Waller with a dashing of Scott Joplin. It's meant to be a humourous piece and is played better with a smile on one's face!I always strive to keep my music as simple as possible to read and to that end don't include pedal markings, fingering or dynamics as I prefer to leave that to the individual pianist and no 2 piano teachers would ever agree on such things. I hope you have as much fun playing it as I did arranging it.
