Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.919263 Composed by Richard Rodgers. Arranged by Joseph Church. Contemporary. Score. 3 pages. Joseph church #6331787. Published by Joseph church (A0.919263). This Jazz reharmonisation of a Rodgers & Hammerstein classic is a super fun and feisty play.  The arrangement has tastes of numerous jazz styles from folk to Bill Evans to Broadway and these fleeting feels keep both the listener and the player on their toes.  There are tricky corners with fast (but very playable and enjoyable) runs along with quick chordal movement, big chords and big jumps.  These tricky moments are a perfect contrast to some calmer more sentimental sections which add some of the warmth you get from the original song.  All of this makes the piece a bit of a challenge to master but very accessible if you like something to get your teeth into.

It Don't Mean a Thing (If It Ain't Got That Swing) is a 1931 Duke Ellington composition now accepted as a jazz standard. The music was written and arranged by Ellington in August 1931 during intermissions at Chicago's Lincoln Tavern and was first recorded by Ellington and his orchestra on February 2, 1932. The song became famous, Ellington wrote, as the expression of a sentiment which prevailed among jazz musicians at the time. Probably the first song to use the phrase swing in the title, it introduced the term into everyday language and presaged the swing era by three years. The Ellington band played the song continually over the years and recorded it numerous times, most often with trumpeter Ray Nance as vocalist.
