Catalonia has a great tradition of Christmas carols, rather like Austria. They are secular songs in general, intended to be sung by anybody at any time during the Christmas period. According to the Catalan writer Joan Amades (1890-1959) these Christmas songs were sung by shepherds at the doors of the churches on Christmas Eve, some of the melodies date back to the 15th century. As their origin would suggest the lyrics can be very down to earth. Joseph and Mary (Josep i Maria) has an English lyric which, like the Song Of The Birds (Cant Dels Ocells), is not a direct translation though the central elements are the same as the Catalan original.
