Haydn wrote this for flute, violin, and cello;  I've arranged it for flute trio.  It could be performed by 3 soprano flutes, 2 soprano and alto, or all 4.  flute 3 and alto parts are basically the same, but adding the lower alto part does improve the sound balance considerably.  I'd rate it overall as about 3-3.5 - not too difficult, but pretty fast tempo;  flute 2 has a pretty difficult part in movement 3 that might require a little work!

Scored for two trumpets in B-flat (with alternate C trumpet parts), horn (with flugelhorn substitute), trombone (with treble clef euphonium substitute) and tuba, the arrangement has wide audience appeal and is very accessible for less experienced players. Key: D minor.‘You were often on my mind when I was writing’, wrote Robert Schumann to Joseph Joachim who had encouraged him to write this concerto. In view of Schumann’s illness, however, Joachim began to have his doubts about the value of the work. In his will, Joachim prohibited the first performance until the 100th anniversary of Schumann’s death in 1956. After detailed editorial work, the premiere was brought forward to 1937. The theme of the middle movement probably formed the basis of Schumann’s Geistervariationen (‘Ghost Variations’), the character of the third movement is that of a grand polonaise. Yehudi Menuhin who performed the world premiere of the unedited version of Schumann’s solo part saw in this piece ‘the bridge between Beethoven’s and Brahms’ concertos’.
