Penderecki?s stylistic methods leave the soloist every opportunity to display their virtuoso skills. The original notes of Haydn?s concerto movements remain present as an underlying framework. Having the horn parts worked into the cadenzas produces a highly structured form that shows the trumpet concerto of the Classical period reflected in the light of modern composition techniques.

Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet (Concerto per il Clarino) in E-flat major was written in 1796 for his friend Anton Weidinger. Weidinger invented a keyed Trumpet which could play chromatically. The Concerto is the first of its kind because of this new technique and Haydn includes melodies and scales in the middle and low register, unknown to the earlier valveless instruments. The work is in the traditional three movements, Fast-Slow-Fast exploiting scales, arpeggios, trills, legato and marcato techniques. Justin Bland has skillfully arranged this great work for Solo Trumpet, 9-part Brass Ensemble and Timpani. Instrumentation is: Solo Trumpet in E-Flat, Trumpet in E-flat, 2 Trumpets (Cornets) in B-flat, Flugelhorn, Horn, 2 Trombones, Euphonium, Tuba and Timpani. One of Haydn's last string quartets arranged for saxophone quartet - the height of elegant and sophisticated writing for a small group of instruments. It takes its name from the second movement, in which Haydn uses the anthem 'God Save Emperor Francis' (which he wrote for Emperor Francis II) as the theme for a set of variations. This tune later became the German National Anthem, and is also well known as the melody for the hymn 'Glorious Things Of Thee Are Spoken'. In four movements, the first and last of which are extended compositions in sonata form. The second movement is the set of variations mentioned above, in which each instrument takes a turn at stating the tune, while the other instruments weave their variations round it. The third movement is a boisterous Minuett. An extended work, requiring neat playing from all musicians. The soprano part is particularly challenging, requiring nimble fingering and some rapid tonguing. The minuet and trio is easier but still rewarding. A chance for a sax quartet to try music from a different historical period.
