Commissioned in 2010 to be performed alongside Gabriel Faure's Requiem, and utilizes the same combination of instruments. The texts for Songs for the Journey have a particularly personal nature. The first text chosen was More Love, a song already written a couple years earlier when the composer and his wife were expecting their first child. The remaining four texts have equally personal associations. Songs for the Journey outlines and explores similar themes as the traditional Latin Requiem - love, faith, mortality, surrender to an eternal will, etc. - but in a less ecclesiastical framework, with poems and texts drawn from a variety of sources.

THE JOURNEY OF LIFE for string quartet, is the 1st Movement of a larger work titled LIFE CELEBRATION. It departs from a normal tonal center and incorporates a contrapuntal style of composition. Each movement in LIFE CELEBRATION can be performed by itself as a stand alone, or together as a three movement string quartet. In a basic classical setting where a touch of 20th century music is desired, one movement might be ideal. All are relatively short, yet give the listener a variety of sounds to experience. All in all, this string quartet is a celebration of The Journey of Life (1st movement), Celebration of Compassion (2nd movement), and Jubilation Celebration (3rd movement). PROGRAM NOTES:
Shadowlands:  A Journey is a programmatic work in three movements for Flute Choir written in memory of the composer’s uncle who died from cancer. 

Movement One (Out of the Darkness), written in a minor key, contains a plaintive melody conveying sadness which later transforms to hope. 

Movement Two (Into the Shadows) begins with a beautiful bass and alto flute duet written in quartal harmony.  The melody is introspective, yet, in conjunction with syncopated chords by 4ths, keeps moving the listener forward toward a climax of resignation. 

Movement Three (Moving Toward the Light), written in a major key, conveys a feeling of hope and peace, ends with a touching chorale which extensively utilizes chords with added seconds.

Scored for piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, and bass flute, and opt. contrabass flute (doubling bass flute part)

The Long Journey, the final monologue of the opera The Golden Dragon based on the eponymous play by Roland Schimmelpfennig, has been given the air of a ballad. A young Chinese works illegally in an Asian restaurant of Anytown. Not having a health insurance, he bleeds to death after a botched dental operation. His colleagues throw his body into the river which runs through the town and carries the body to the sea. He floats back to his home country – this last journey is the theme of the monologue.

Sightreading Journey is designed to help adult students journey into the world of music reading.  This method begins with very basic information and sequentially adds range and rhythm.  30 short reading samples move from 1 line staff to a full staff by gradually fanning out from do and emphasizing intervallic reading.  To allow for maximum flexibility, absolute pitch is not employed; this allows a wide choice of instrument and voice friendly ranges.  From the start, students experience moving both up and down first in steps which are followed by intuitive intervals. The verbiage is minimal while the print is large.  Although particularly intended for mature learners, the format is appropriate for any age.  .

The Journey for Percussion Ensemble is for 8 percussionist. Written for early advanced High School or early college groups, the piece tells a story about taking a journey from light to dark, moving from good times and bad, and coming out a better person for it. The piece starts off with a quiet waltz, lullaby-esque, providing a tonal anchor and tranquility. As it moves into the next section, we hear the first main melodic idea. While still maintaining this idea of calm and ambient energy, the main theme should be reflective of an old spaghetti western film. The vibraphonist should play loud and proud.When the piece moves into the heavier 6/8 section, the battery should be sensitive to the melodic instruments. There should be a quiet forward energy weaving through the entire piece.
