His Journey and Return, 4 pages, is an intermediate piece in the key of F, is the sixth piece from a fairy tale suite of 8 pieces entitled The Kingdom of Light.  This work tells the story of a beautiful kingdom where the people are always singing and dancing. A place with glorious sunsets and sparkling seashores, with no evil lurking anywhere...until one day the Dark Knight arrives. Can the Prince save his lovely Princess? Can peace and safety be restored once more?   For individual student enjoyment as well as for recital programs. The recordings have narration and character voice overs followed by the piano piece that tells the story. Churches can use this for religious purposes as this can be allegorical in nature.

The solo, His Journey and Return, is in 4/4 time, gallops triumphantly into this suite to dispel evil once and for all. Staccatos, tenutos and accents abound. Students with small hands can play single notes instead of octaves when necessary.

This is a new recital piece for horn and piano with some special effects.

Journey is a three movement work for horn and piano of approximately 15 minutes in duration. Score is 20 pages. Horn part is 7 pages. It travels from one scene to the next changing in texture, character and range.

The first movement begins with acoustical elements of interaction between horn and piano as the horn introduction is interrupted by frequent rests so that the reverberations of the piano with damper pedal pressed can be heard. To hear the introduction on your computer please turn the sound up. The body of the movement features lyrical horn lines with unexpected harmonies with the piano and then scampers to the end.

In the whimsical second movement the horn plays a happy-go-lucky tune with a smooth melodic line which is highlighted by a minimalist pattern in the piano with modulations that are often out-of-sync between horn and piano and is true to character until the final cadence.                      

The third movement opens with a register of the piano strings temporarily covered by a bead chain which creates a metallic sonority to compliment the timbre of the stopped horn, thus resulting in a machine like effect. Then a heroic theme alternates with a playful dialog between horn and piano, changing moods and meters until the finale when Journey is completed.  

This is a fun and challenging piece to show off in a recital.

Shadowlands:  A Journey is a programmatic work in three movements for Flute Choir written in memory of the composer’s uncle who died from cancer. 

Movement One (Out of the Darkness), written in a minor key, contains a plaintive melody conveying sadness which later transforms to hope. 

Movement Two (Into the Shadows) begins with a beautiful bass and alto flute duet written in quartal harmony.  The melody is introspective, yet, in conjunction with syncopated chords by 4ths, keeps moving the listener forward toward a climax of resignation. 

Movement Three (Moving Toward the Light), written in a major key, conveys a feeling of hope and peace, ends with a touching chorale which extensively utilizes chords with added seconds.

Scored for piccolo, 3 flutes, alto flute, and bass flute, and opt. contrabass flute (doubling bass flute part)
