Using the words of Christina Rossetti's delightful poem of the same name, this is an unaccompanied choral piece for female voices (SSAA with some divisi).  It begins 'My heart is like a singing bird whose nest is in a watered shoot' and as the voices weave together, a series of beautiful imagery is presented including apple trees, rainbow shells, peacocks, silver fleur de lys, a halcyon sea, and a dais of silk and down. Towards the end it breaks out into a joyful 'Happy Birthday' waltz, before the final climax 'The Birthday of my life!.

Composed in lockdown 2020, this was my first attempt at writing music for my ladies choir (SSA voices). I used the words of a well loved poem I remembered from school; 'Song of the River' from 'The Water Babies' (by Charles Kingsley) which tells the story of a river from its clear and pure source, through a polluted town, then out into the sea. SATB a cappella traditional style Christmas song, using words from a poem by Barry Cornwall (1787-1874)

Imagine a roaring log fire in an old house in winter, young people are gathering, coming in from the cold. The three verses speak of various decorations they bring in from outside - the laurel, the holly and the mistletoe. The tone is jolly and mischievous, and the piece finishes with the words:

'Ah nobody knows nor ever shall know
What is done under the mistletoe'
