Clarinet and string quartet - Digital Download

SKU: S9.Q53550

For clarinet and string quartet. Composed by Peter Eotvos. This edition: score and parts. In seven episodes Joyce musically portrays the erotic reveries of the protagonist Leopold Bloom from chapter 11 of James Joyce's Ulysses. Also available in a version - with lyrics - for soprano and string quartet (The Sirens Cycle, Part I). Downloadable, Score and parts. Duration 20 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q53550. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53550).

As most of my instrumental pieces, Joyce is also based on a literary source. My first string quartet (Korrespondenz) transferred the correspondence between Leopold and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, at times word by word, to the world of music, whose strong dramatic character effectively reflects the conflicts between father and son. I found the closest literary references to my second string quartet, which takes its listeners to the world of Odysseus and the sirens, in the works of Joyce, Homer and Kafka. The string quartet is enriched with an additional soprano part, which tells the classic story from three different perspectives. The complete title of my second string quartet is The Sirens Cycle, consisting of three movements: Joyce – Homer – Kafka. The twenty-minute-long duration of the first movement of the cycle “Joyce†allows it to be performed independently. This time, the vocal part accompanied by the strings is replaced by a solo clarinet, which – instead of giving a verbal account of Chapter 11 of Joyce’s Ulysses – renders the quite masculine protagonist, Leopold Bloom’s musing over the attractive barmaids with befittingly vigorous musical gestures. Joyce for clarinet and string quartet immerses in James Joyce’s unique world and typical imaginative word creations, placing them into the world of musical composition. Peter Eötvös.

Composed by Music and James Joyce, Ofer Ben-Amots, and Poetry (our of Chamber Music). Contemporary. Score and parts. 127 pages. The Composer's Own Press #4615369. Published by The Composer's Own Press (A0.944034).

Ben-Amots: The Joyce Cycle (1986)

James Joyce's collection of 36 love poems titled Chamber Music has been a source of inspiration to many composers. From these, Ben-Amots has set nine for medium voice and piano (later orchestrated--see below), in a style he characterizes as neo-romantic to match the deliberate archaicism of Joyce's language. The songs are meant to be sung as a complete cycle, but these complex and beautiful settings may be performed independently.

Shortly after composing the cycle, Ben-Amots orchestrated it, and he now considers the orchestral version to have priority. Deftly and lightly scored (winds in pairs, no heavy brass), this version sounds strikingly Mahlerian in places.

1. O Sweetheart... The lover finds solace in love when friends him fail.

2. My love is in a light attire... He admires the sight of his love walking through an orchard.

3. My dove my beautiful one... In language reminiscent of the Song of Songs, he bids her arise.

 4. Rain has fallen... They seek shelter on a rainy day.

5. Sleep Now, O Sleep Now... The lover's unquiet heart is calmed with a kiss.

6. It was out by Donnycarney... A cheerful folksong, sealed with another kiss.

7. Winds of May... By the turbulent sea, the loved one has disappeared.

8. I Hear an Army... Giving way to despair the lover dreams of an army ferociously charging up out of the depths. But...

9. From Dewy dreams... It was just a dream, after all.

Composed by Mary Ann Joyce. Concert,Contemporary. Score. 4 pages. Mary Ann Joyce-Walter #6207637. Published by Mary Ann Joyce-Walter (A0.989230).

Housman’s poem is about the nature of life, here represented by the cherry tree. The poet feels he does not have enough time to appreciate this beautiful world, because, like all living things, he will die.  The first stanza is a description of the cherry tree in its spring-time splendor. It is as 'wearing white for Eastertide as if it is celebrating a religious festival. In the second stanza, the mood shifts from the tree to the poet himself, as he thinks about the inevitability of death. He, a twenty-year old, estimates that he has about fifty years left to live. The final stanza expresses the poet's feeling that fifty more years does not give him enough time to enjoy the beauties of nature. He decides that he will look at the cherry tree not only when it is hung with bloom, but also in winter when it is hung with snow.  The poet thus celebrates the beauties of nature in all seasons, but also poignantly laments the inevitable passage from youth to old age and death, the seasons of his own life.

I composed this setting of Loveliest of Trees to celebrate the 86th birthday of Joyce Hope Suskind, beloved friend, brilliant musician and composer par excellence.

Composed by Brian Joyce. Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Score. 12 pages. Brian Joyce #4966351. Published by Brian Joyce (A0.836716).

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

## Beijo Partido is a song composed by Brazilian guitarist and composer Toninho Horta, and it has become one of the most emblematic songs in Brazilian popular music, especially within the context of the Clube da Esquina movement, of which Horta was a member. The song also gained notoriety in the voice of Milton Nascimento, one of the leading figures of this movement.

### Origin and Context
Toninho Horta composed Beijo Partido in 1973, during a period when he was involved with Clube da Esquina, a collective of musicians from Minas Gerais that mixed elements of Brazilian popular music, jazz, rock, and classical music. The song reflects this mix of styles, characterized by complex harmonies and a melancholic melody, elements that became Horta's trademarks.

### Lyrics and Meaning
The lyrics of Beijo Partido are poetic and subjective, a common trait in the compositions of Clube da Esquina. The song talks about the end of a romantic relationship, using the metaphor of a broken kiss to describe the rupture and pain of separation. Despite its melancholic tone, the song carries an intrinsic beauty in the way sadness is expressed delicately and introspectively.

### Recordings and Impact
Beijo Partido was first recorded on Toninho Horta's solo album, Terra dos Pássaros, released in 1980. The version by Milton Nascimento, which also became well-known, helped to further popularize the song. Over the years, Beijo Partido has been covered by various artists, both in Brazil and abroad, and is considered a classic of MPB (Música Popular Brasileira).

Composed by Juliana Hall. 6 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8769-1E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8769-1E).

English.

Juliana Hall wrote her song cycle Of That So Sweet Imprisonment for mezzo soprano Stephanie Blythe, for whom Hall had expressed a desire to write a piece. Blythe accepted Hall's proposal, and her request was that Hall write a song cycle for contralto voice. In recounting her motivation for writing this piece, Hall - in a discussion with Blythe at the Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar (where Hall was the Guest Composer in 2018) - said You know what I think is really so wonderful is how you [Blythe] communicate, from here to there, right to the audience...it just speaks, the words, the text, come right...right to the heart of each person...I was thinking, what a wonderful person, what a wonderful voice...to be able to communicate...I've just got the most perfect singer to take these songs, this wonderful subject of love, and present it to the world
The seven poems Hall set in Of That So Sweet Imprisonment were chosen from James Joyce's early book of poems, Chamber Music (Elkin Mathews, London) published in 1907.  The poems are arranged in a narrative arc that takes the listener from the presence of love in nature (Strings in the Earth and Air), to the human feeling of emptiness when love is not present (Winds of May), to a description exulting in the joys of human love (Of That So Sweet Imprisonment), to expression of human love such as kissing (In the Dark Pine-Wood), to love's tranformation of a girl into a woman through love making (Bid Adieu), to the feelings of contentment in the early morning after making love (At That Hour When All Things Have Repose), and finally a call for the lovers to go to a special place where they may remain together in love (O Cool is the Valley).
Of That So Sweet Imprisonment will be premiered on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, by Ms. Blythe and pianist Alan Smith, on the third concert of the Sparks & Wiry Cries' NYC songSLAM Festival, entitled Expressions of Love: Stephanie Blythe and Friends.
